Bookbinding - machines. - In machines for affixing thin flexible covers to periodical magazines and the like, the book is carried by an intermittently-rotating disk throughout the several operations. The disk E, Fig. 1, is provided on its several faces B with clamps C for holding the books, which are fed from a table D to the clamps by a plunger; the clamp under the table D is held open against the action of springs c<1>, to receive the book, by a lever c<2> actuated from a cam c on the main driving- shaft L. The disk E is rotated by means of a ratchet-wheel b<3>, a pawl b<2>, a link b<1>, and a lever rocked by a cam b on the shaft L. The lower edge of a book receives adhesive from a roller f rotatable in a trough F, and arrives above a pile of covers G. The pile is pressed into contact with the back of the book by a cam g and lever g<1>, and the top cover remains attached to the book, and is supported by wires until it arrives above an affixing-device J. The latter comprises a plate j<2>, Fig. 5, pressed upwards by a lever J<2> to press the cover on the back of the book A, and sliding jaws j, j<1> adapted to press the cover on the side edges of the book. The jaw j<1> is operated by a cam J<6> in a plate pivoted to a link J<5> and to the jaw j, the plate being rocked by the link J<5> and a lever J<4>. The jaw j is adjustable by a screw j<Î>. When the covered book arrives above a delivery device K, Fig. 1, the clamp C is released and the book falls. The books are pushed along the delivery table by a plate k<1> reciprocated by rods k<2> and a cam on the shaft B<1>. A plate k<4>, attached to weighted cords, presses the books against the plate k<1>.
