To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE BnIpLnR, a citizen of the United States of America, re-

siding at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to photography and particularly to a class thereunder lmown as camera supports-copy holding.

An object of this invention is to provide a copy holder to be utilized in connection with a camera and in connection with a base or support made adjustable in much the same manner as my copy holder disclosed in my Patent Number 7 93,97 8, dated July 4, 1905, wherein the copy holder is hinged with relation to the said base;

The present invention consists in. part of a copy holder which may besubstitu'ted for the copy' holder disclosed in the patent above mentioned and which may be employed in connection with a base of similar construc tion. In fact the copy holder of the patent and the one forming the subject matter of this application are interchangeable on the base.-

The invention has forits object to provide a copy holder having clamps whereby.one or a plurality of leaves of a book or copy may be held substantially at right angles to the remainder of the book or copy and as said invention is now employed, the matter to be photographed is clamped toa verticallydis posed-portion of a holder whereas other matter such as leaves of a book or copy lie horizontally and are clamped on an extension of the support,

This invention has been found useful in reproducing copies on a large scale as for instance where the contents of a page or record is to be photographed substantially the size of the original or when but one page is to be exposed. The copy holder patented heretofore as identified herein, provides for Y exposing both leaves of a book or copy at a time.

As shown in the drawing, the holder coma prises two portionsstanding at right angles to each other, one portion'to be hereinafter termed the bottom 4, and the other portion to be hereinafter termed the back 5. The bottom and back are connected by bracesG, for the purpose of increasing the rigidity of the structure and the said bottom and back are provided with clamps for holding, copy thereon. The back is provided preferably with two slots 7 and 8, inwhich the clamp: ing members are adjustable and=thebottom is likewiseprovided with slots toreceive the clamps. The -clamps are of the same constr uction; and'therefore a descriptionof one ofthe clampsWill suffice for the purpose of disclosing the structureand operation of all of the clamps which coact with the copy in: aslot and: one end ofthe) sleeve'is-- pro v holder; Each clamp has a; sleeve 9,,slidable opposite-end of the said sleeve is threaded to receive the ring nut 11, which serves to hold the sleeve in its slot. A rod 12, is slidable in the sleeve and has one end screw threaded to receive the nut 13.

The sleeve 9, is threaded to receive a nut 14, and a spring 15, is applied to the rod 12, interposed between the nuts 13 and '14:. The spring 15, holds the rod normally projected and the inner end of each rod which extends through the sleeve 9, is provided with a collar 16, adjustably held on the said rod by a binding screw 17. The collar has a lug 18, which is designed to engage copy such as a book or the like. T he rod is rotatable in the sleeve 7 and is slidable longitudinally therein, hence pressure on the outer end. of the rod will force the lug 18, from the face of the copy holder until it has passed the plane of the copy applied to the holder after which rotation of the rod will cause the lug to overlie the copy. Whenthe rod is released, the spring will exert pressure to hold the lug in engagement with the copy.

Mounted on the rod 12, is a plurality of fingers 19, which are rotatable with relation to the rod in order that the angle of the fingers with relation to each other and with relation to the lug 18, may be effected to cause the fingers to press thecopy at the desired points. If the copy has a tendency to buckle or roll, the fingers can be properly adjusted to overcome the tendency so that the copy may be held flat with relation to the surface of the holder. The fingers are held on the rod and in contact with each other by means of the thumb nut 20, which is threaded on the inner end of the rod, it being apparent from an inspection of Fig. 6, that one of the fingers is in engagement with the collar 16, whereas the other finger is engaged by the thumb nut, but the parts are held in assembled relation, as stated, through the medium of the said thumb nut.

The back and bottom of the holder are each preferably provided with two rods and the clamping rods associated therewith.

Fig. 4, illustrates the manner of utilizing the copy holder for holding a book in which it will be seen that the back is open and one of the backs of the book lies in contact with the back of the copy holder whereas the other back of the book is lying on the bottom of the said copy holder, both portions of the book being held in place through the medium of the clamps heretofore described.

In Fig. 5, I show a modified. construction, in that the standard 21, is provided with a bracket 22, which is slotted as at 23, to receive the bolts 2%,which bolts are slidable in the slotted portion of the bracket in order that the holder 25, may be adjusted longitudinally of the bracket. In some instances,

this construction might be utilized for the purpose of changingthe position of the copy holder with relation. to the camera for focusingthe instrument. The construction shown in F ig. 5, could be used. independently of a 'base having telescopic sections or it might be used in conjunction. therewith. It is to be understood that clamps similar to those heretofore disclosed may be used in connection. with the copy holder in-Fig. 5, or they may be omitted.

In a copy holder, a copy holding member having slots therein, members movable in the slots, copy engagin devices, means in the members in the slots for carrying the copy engaging members, and means bearing against the member movable in the slot and engaging a portion of the means for carrying the copy engaging devices for holding the said copy engaging devices in contact with the copy. 7

2. In a copy holder, a memberhaving slots therein, members movable in the slots and having ape-rturesat right angles to the plane of the copy holding member,- copy engaging devices, means in the members in the slots and slidable in the apertures thereof for carrying the copy engaging devices,

and means for moving the slidable device in the members movable in the slots.

3. In a copy holder, a copy holding member, the said copy holder having slots, sleeves slidable in the slots, members slid-' able in the sleeves, copy engaging members on the said members, and means whereby the said copy engaging members are pressed into engagement with copy on the copy holding member. 1

4. In a copy holder, a copy holding member having slots, sleeves slidable in the slots, rods slidable in the sleeves, a collar on each rod having a lug, fingers rotatable on each rod, means for clamping the fingers and the collar in operative relation, and means for compressing the fingers into engagement with copy on the copy holding member;

5. A copy holding member having slots therein, sleeves adjustable in the slots, rods slidable in the sleeves, a collar on each rod having a lug, fingers rotatable-on. each rod, means for clamping the fingers and collar in operative relation, and means for com.- pressing the fingers into engagement with. copy on the copy holding member.

6. Ina copy holder, a base, a standard, a copy support mounted on the standard, said support having slots therein, sleeves adjustable in the slots, arod slidable in each sleeve, a collar on. each rod having a lug, fingers rotatable on each rod, means for clamping the fingers and sleeve in operative relation, and means for pressing thecopy engaging members into engagement with said copy.

7. In a copy holder, a base, a standard, a bracket on the standard, a copy support adjustable with relation to the bracket, said support having slots therein, sleeves adjustable in the slots, a rod slidable in each sleeve, a collar on each rod having a lug, fingers rotatable on each rod, means for clamping the fingers and sleeve in operative relation, and means for pressing the copy engaging members into engagement with said copy.

8. In a copy holder, a support for the copy, said support having slots, sleeves adjustable in the slots, each of said sleeves having a flange and a nut whereby the sleeve is guided in the slot, a rod slidable in the sleeve, a spring encircling the rod, and nuts for confining the spring and clamps on the rod.

9. In a copy holder, a support having slots, a sleeve in each slot, a nut threaded on the sleeve, a rod slidable in the sleeve, a spring encircling the rod and having its end bearing against the nut, a nut threaded on the outer end of the rod for confining the outer end of the spring, a collar on the rod near its inner end, fingers on the rod, and a nut on the inner end of the rod for clamping the fingers in engagement with the collar.

10. In a copy holder, a base, a standard, a copy support hinged with relation to the ing against the nut, a nut threaded on the outer end of the rod for confining the outer end of the spring, a collar on the rod near its inner end, fingers on the rod, and a nut on the inner end of the rod for clamping the fingers in engagement with the collar.

11. A copy holding member, sleeves movable with relation to the said member, members slidable in the sleeves, said members being movable at an angle to the surface of the copy supporting member, copy engaging devices on the said members, and means on the slidable members for exerting tension on the copy engaging devices.

12. In a copy holder, a support, sleeves movable with relation to the support, members slidable in the sleeves, copy engaging devices on the said members, and means mounted on the slidable members and engaging the sleeves for exerting tension on the said members. 7
