Abstract

4120. Knoedler, E. L. Feb. 20, 1913, [Convention date]. Mantles are shaped and hardened in one operation by directing a hardening-flame into a mantle placed in a mould or muffle, which is such that a thin film of hot gases is maintained between the mantle and the mould. The mould is a perforated tube of platinum, ceramic material, or other refractory material, and may be open or closed at its lower end. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, the mould has a closed end h, the perforations in which are larger than those in the sides. Suitable dimensions are given in the Specification. The mouth d of the mould is flared and provided with a centring-shoulder e for the legs f of the mantlering, and the burner c is used in the position shown in Fig. 1. In a modification, Fig. 5, the mould is an open cylinder with perforations l in the upper part. In another form, Fig. 6, a closed mould o encloses the perforated mould to give a higher temperature and increase the hardening effect. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) states also that mantles of square, triangular, or other cross-section may be obtained by using suitably-shaped moulds, and describes a further modified mould, Fig. 6 (Cancelled), having perforated sides m and an imperforate end n considerablv below the end of the mantle, and a machine for simultaneously hardening and shaping a number of mantles by means of the moulds, Figs. 10, 11, and 13 (Cancelled). In this machine, the mantles are supported by their lugs 37 on loose plates 38 carried by a tray 40. The tray is first supported on a frame 2<a> over burners 4 for the preliminary burning. The tray is then moved forwards and is lowered on to vertical guiding-rods 41 on a carriage 8, on which the moulds 7 are mounted. The tray 40 moves down to the position shown in Fig. 11 (Cancelled), leaving the plates 38 resting on the upper edges of the moulds 7, and the carriage is run on rails 9 beneath the hardening- burners 11. The rails 9 are adjustable by means of a lever 10. The air and gas supplies to the burners 11 are controlled by valves normally closed by weighted arms and opened by cams 21 on either end of a shaft 23, which is set in rotation by means of a hand-lever 36 and makes a single rotation. The lever 36 is connected by a link 35 to a pin 29 pivoted upon a yoke 28 connected to a clutch member 26, which is adapted to engage a belt-wheel 24 on the countershaft 23<a>. This drives the cam shaft 23 by means of a worm 33 and wormwheel 31. When the lever 36 is operated, the pin 29 is disengaged from a pin 30 on the worm-wheel 31, the clutch member 26 is operated by springs 27, and the shafts 23<a>, 23 rotate until the pins 29, 30 again engage and the air and gas valves are closed. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
