7 lBelit'known that 1, ROBERT Wywinnnn- WAX, acitizen of the United States, residingat Atlantic City, the countyof Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have l invented certain new and usefullmprovements in.
Heating or Welding Devices, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to apparatus for heating castings or the like, and retain'' ing the same at a; proper temperature, while beingwelded, but not necessarily restricted to this use. i 7
An important object of the invention is to provide apparatus of the above men-- tioned character, embodying a table upon) which the castings or thelike to be welded, areplaced before or during the heating process, and having means for gradually and uniformly heating, and cooling the castings, upon the table, to prevent crack ing or distortion thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide apparatus'of the above mentioned character, which 1s simple in construction,
inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for accuratelycontrolling the temperature of the apparatus, during the heating or cooling periods.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of apparatus embodying my invention, and,
Fig. 2 is a central vertical transverse sectional view through the same.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpos of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a horizontal open frame, included in the topof a table. This frame comprises preferably metallic horizontal side strips 6,
and spaced top and bottom metallic strips 7 and 8. This metallic frame has connection, at its corners with preferably metallic legs 9, form lL-shaped in cross-section, as shown.
The metallic frame, constituting the top of the table is filled with a refractory heat HEATING on WELDING 'nnvion.

as silica or other material! Thetop metallic strips 7' "are arranged above the upper s ur- 7 face of the heat absorbing and radiating material 10, and thus serve to prevent the castings from contacting with the same.
The numeral 11 designates a topor cover,- preferably including a metallic framelQ, to which is secured a sheet metalltop 13a11'd sides l-e. This top may be formed of any other suitable material. The s top has its lower end open and is adapted tobe moved downwardly into contact with the table top. Means are providedtoraise and'lower the top or cover 11', and retain the same in the desired elevated position, comprising a cable 14, attached to the central portion. of the top orcover', as shown at 15. This suitable fixed supports (not shown). The
cable 14L has connection with a weight 17,
adapted to retain the top or cover 11 in the desired vertical position, when moved thereto. 7 V
The heating means for the apparatus in cludes a plurality of burners 19 of the Bunsen-type. These burners are arranged beneath the top of the table and have tips 20, preferably discharging theflame upon 5 the heat absorbing and radiating element 10, between the strips 11. The burners 19 have means 21 to properly mix air and gas, and these burners are provided with cut off valves 22, controlling the supply of gas from a pipe 23. This pipe is preferably sep liired to the legs 9 by brackets 24 or the 1 e. f The operation of the apparatus is asfollows:
The castings or the like, to be heated and welded, are placed upon the metallic strips 7 a of the top of the table, and the top or cover 11 is moved to the lower closed position, to contact with the top of the table. It is thus apparent that the casting is entirely surrounded or inclosed so that it cannot contact with currents of air. A suitable number of the burners 19 are set into operation, which serve to heat theheat absorber or radiating element 10 which in-turn radiates its heat in a gradual and uniform manner, to the casting or castings.
The welding operation may take place upon the top of the table or the castings may be removed therefrom, during the Welding pperat-ion T-he vyelding may be effected by the ordinary acetylene velding torch, While the castings are supported upon the 5 table, and the cover 11 is elevated. During this operation, the burners may be operatiifg, thus; retaining the table top at a suitable temperature, which. is, transmitted to the castings,"so that they are retained at a proper temperature, hile being elded! esired to gradually Qeojol the stings sub quent totlieir Welding aiicl to distortion 'oryver'ackiiig, they are on the top "of the table and the lid or co ie r llr fis returned to the closed position, thflusfsierving to hold the heat in X ini'ty tq'thecastin s, and protect the V efro'm currents 0i? air, The burners 19 cutefi iand'the element 10 gradually pits heatto the casting and the sur- 1 111g atmosphere, whereby the casting 66 13 adui'ally. v u s It is to b" understood that the form of Vmy invention herewith shown and described ifsltobe takefn as a preferred example of the same, and thatvarious changes in'the shape,
size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departmg from, the spir t of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
In an apparatus of the character scribed, a metallic table comprising an approximately flat open frame top, having upper spaced substantially horizontal strips and legs depending from 'tl'ie frame t6p, 'a fillingof silica fonthe frame top farranged in a plane beneath the metallic strips, where'- by castings are supported in spaced relation to the silica to prevent fusing, a "cover to move downwardly in proximity to th name top, and a plurality of gas burners supported near and beneath the frame "top to heat the silica.
In testimony whereof I aflik my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
