Abstract

2914. Fairfax, J. S. Feb. 4. Two- and four-stroke cycle engines; driving- gear; cylinders, cooling.-Two revolving sets of parallel cylinders are arranged at an angle to each other and each piston b' of one set is connected with a piston of the other set. The cylinder sets may be connected by bevel and worm gearing f, f<2> with the drive shaft, and the pistons may be single or double acting. In a two-stroke engine, single-acting pistons may serve as pumps, or the bottom end of each cylinder may be used for this purpose, the pistons controlling exhaust ports and transfer passages from the pumps. Charge is admitted to the pumps through an automatic valve and ports in the fixed casings a and the cylinder castings. In a four-stroke engine, the exhaust is through ports in the casing a and the cylinder casting and past a beat valve which with the admission valve is operated by a face-cam e<1> at the rear of each cylinder set and driven at half the speed of the cylinder casting. Single-acting pistons may be used for circulating cooling- water and lubricant. Several sets of cylinders may be arranged around one shaft f<1>.
