Abstract
2070. Matthews, F. E., and Strange, E. H. Jan. 26. India-rubber, preparation of; vulcanizing- materials. - Natural and synthetic caoutchouc and caoutchouc-like substances are treated with liquid sulphur dioxide to produce compounds of caoutchouc &c. which resemble caoutchouc. In an example, synthetic rubber produced by the action of sodium on butadiene is dissolved in benzene, and the cooled solution is sealed up with liquid sulphur dioxide. After heating at 40‹ C. for some time, the vessel is opened and, on evaporation to dryness. an elastic product results which may be mixed with fillers, untreated rubber, sulphur, or other vulcanization-agent and vulcanized according to the amount of "vulcanization" which has already been effected by the sulphur dioxide. Specification 24,790/10, [Class 2(iii), Dyes, &c.], is referred to.
