[Addition to 15,535/13.] Cigarette-making machines.--The cigarettemaking machine described in the parent Specification is adapted so that the springs or clips for maintaining the paper shells on the tubular mouthpieces are automatically operated, and a hopper device is provided whereby each mould is furnished with a separate hopper opening. The clips 19 are mounted on a front plate 24, Figs. 1 and 2, which is pressed downwards by springs 28, thereby clipping the paper shells on the mouthpieces 18. When the plungers are moved forward, the guide-rods 13, when near the end of the stroke, lift the plate 24 by means of the bevelled ends 27 and allow the plungers to force off the cigarette. During the greater portion of the backward stroke, the plate 24 is maintained in its elevated position by spring-controlled plates 26 to allow fresh paper shells to be placed on the mouthpieces; but at the end of the stroke, the plates 26 are withdrawn by means of the engagement of the guide-rods 13 with the turned-up ends of the plates 26, and so allow the plate 24 and clips 19 to descend. The hopper'device, Fig. 4, consists of a frame 30 having hoppers 31, one for each mould, a lid or cover with underlying projections being used to press enough tobacco for one cigarette through each hopper into the moulds.
