Abstract

26,384. Reid, J. Nov. 17. Suction apparatus.-A suction dredge head comprises a preferably cylindrical member 1 considerably larger than the suction pipe 5 and formed with a contracted opening 3 across which is oscillated, by means of a cylinder 18, a burrowing-member 10 in the form of a series of blades, water being supplied through a jacket 20 and holes 22. A space 17 may be left as shown, or the blades may be mounted in a bucket-shaped member embracing the ends of the head; or guards in the form of plates extending below the blades may be mounted on each end of the head. The longitudinal and transverse blades of the burrowing-member may be fixed together, or the longitudinal blades may be fixed and the transverse blades be divided into teeth and reciprocated in the spaces between the fixed blades, water being supplied to the blades in each case; or a grid 66, Fig. 11, having teeth 69 may reciprocate over fixed bars 70 provided with teeth 71 formed with waterpassages.
