Abstract
24,672. Roothaan, J., and Ferranti, Ltd. Oct. 30. Switches, quick - action; spring - straining arrangements.-A quick-action mechanism for electric switches &c. comprises three concentric tubes, an inner operating-tube c, a middle fixed tube b, and an outer tube a carrying the switch or other parts, together with controlling-balls j and a spring l arranged so that the tube a receives a quick rectilinear motion in both directions independently of the operating-tube c. The ends of the spring l are attached to cross-pins n, m situated in slots in the three tubes. The balls are situated in apertures i in the fixed tube b and can engage in addition either with openings e, f in the outer tube a or with openings g, h in the operating-tube c, the edges of the latter openings being bevelled. With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, the initial upward movement of the operating- tube c causes the bevelled edges of the openings g to push the balls j into engagement with the openings e, whereby the tube a is locked to the fixed tube b. Continued movement of the tube c carries up the pin m and stretches the spring l, the pin n being held fast by the locked tube a. When the lower opening h in the tube c comes opposite the balls j, they move out of the openings e in the tube a, thus unlocking it, whereupon the spring l collapses and the pin n carries the tube a upwards with a quick movement independent of the operating- tube c. The parts then assume the position shown in Fig. 2, and when the tube c is moved downwards, a similar action occurs, the pin n being carried down to stretch the spring l, while the tube a and pin m are temporarily locked as described above.
