y HERBERT- HENRY BERRY AND WILLIAM J. MARKHAM, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
PROTECTED OR ARMOR-CLAD ELECTRIC-SWITCH FUSE.
To all 'whom tt 'may concern:
Be itl known that we, HERBERT HENRY BERRY and VViLLrAM JAMES MARKHAM, both citizens of the -United Kingdom `of Great Britain and Ireland, and residents of 78 Upper Thames street, London, E. C., Eng land, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Protectedor Armor-Clad Electric-'Switch Fuses, of which the following is a specication, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use-the same.
This invention relates to electric switches andy electric switch fuses of that type which are inclosed in a metal case having a lhinged cover which carries the switch blades, the said blades being fixed to .a rod adapted Ato move to and fro throughqor below the saidI cover and being mounted thereon, the said switch blades andthe rod with their connectingpa'rts being spring cont-rolled for the purpose of producing the necessary quick make and quick break movements. Forms of this 'switch have beendevised in whichv it is impossible to close the ,cover with the switch blades in the on 7 position and also impossibleto open the cover when the blades are in that position it being necessary to withdraw the `blades to the cti position to both close and open-the cover and our invention is applicable to -this form of switch. Hitherto the requisite movements of the switch blades from the on to the off positions and vice versa have been accomplished by attaching to the outer end of the rod a knob or equivalent by which it can be pulled out and thrust back and although this arrangement answers-its purr pose well when there is plenty of room in the place where the switches are 'fixed .itis unsuitable in those places where lthe space is limited and access to the knob not easily possible.
To make the class of switch first herein referred to more convenientin use and particularly to overcome the `objection mentioned in the last paragraph we have devised a means whereby the movements of the rod carrying the switch blades can be effected without inconvenience and the switch can be fixed in more limited space than where the knob or other such handle is provided.
Our invention consists in providingahand lever at either side of the case containing the switch to which hand lever a lever inside Specioation of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 13; 1910. Applicationvled .Tune 9, 1910. Serial No. 566,067.
the case is connected, the said lever being adapted to push on and pull off the switch blades according to the direction in which the hand lever is moved.
V'Ve will now describe our invention with reference to the accompanying dnawings in Figure l. is a sectional view of "a combined double pole switch and fuses with its hinged cover open. Fig. 2. is a sectional View showing thevhinged cover closed with the switch and fuses in its current oli" position. Fig. 3. is a sectional View showingv the 4hinged cover closed and the switch and fuses in its on position. Fig. 4. is a Tsectional view showing that it is impossible for a careless operator to close the same if the switch and fuses are in the on positin. It also shows -that the position of the switch contacts must bein the off position, and the cover closed as inV Fig. 2 before the switch can be placed in on position asin Fig. 3. Figs. l, 2, 3 and 4 show an outer case A with a lid or cover B arranged to open upon a hinge' C. Attached to the cover a rapid make and rapid break switching device is arranged to travel backward land forward in a parallel direction between two fixed points.
In the present example a band spring D rigidlyfixed to the cover B at E, E', has two loose members or metal plates 2, 2, sprung into slots in the spring D at H, H, and into V-ishaped grooves in a plunger head 8 which is attached to a coupling or couplings or plunger or plungers carrying the switch blades and the inter-locking projecting tube N. vFormerly the plunger or plungers to which the switch mechanism is coupled has been guided through an aperture or apertures in the cover` of the case but 1n our improved apparatus we arrange the switch coupling or mechanism to slide backward and forward between two fixed points onone, two or moreV guide rods M which we attach to the inside cover of the case. In order to obtain the make and break action of the switching device'we arrange one or more operating levers F fixed to a spindle G the said spindle taking its bearings on opposite sides .of the case A, one end of the spindle G is arranged to project through a gland I in the side of the case and has a fixed or detachable lever or key I for the purpose of moving the levers F and-of `op` erating the switch. The lever F l s a bifurcation F in its free end, engaging a pin 3a in the plungei head 3.
The operation is as follows: To raise the cover B, the lever P is moved to the right, thereby forcing` the end of the lever F upwardly, and by engagement of said lever with the pin 8, the member 3 and contacts Q are brought into the position shown in Fig. Q. A Jfurther movement of levers P will raise the cover (through contact with said cover) with the free end of lever F,
the switch is in the on position would result in contacting the member N with' the abutment R and necessitate a reversal of the s witch to the oft position, before the closing ot' the cover would be effected.
Similarly, from an inspection of Figs. 3l
and 4t, it is obvious that the cover could not be opened while the switch is closed; because of contact of the member N with the abutment R.
lhat we claim and desire to secure by` Letters Patent is l. In an electric switch, a case, a cover on theY case, a spring secured to said cover, Vslots in the ends'of said spring, plates engaging the slots, a plunger head, said plun-A ger head having grooves, said plates' en. gaging said grooves, said plunger head having a pin, a bifurcated lever engaging said pin for actuating said plunger head'against the action of said spring, means Jor actuatingthe lever, electric contacts secured to said case, and electric contacts 'carriedby said plunger head adapted to engage the first said electric contacts.
2. In an electric switch, a case, a cover on the case, a spring secured to said cover,
vslots in the ends of said spring, plates en gaging the slots, a plunger head, said plunger head having grooves, plates engaging said grooves, a bifurcated lever engaging said plunger head to actuate the same, aA
rod carried by said cover, a tube. carried by said plunger head, said tube being slid# emee'e able `u'pon said rod for guiding said plunger head, stationary electric contacts in said case, and electric contacts carriedby saifd plunger head adapted to engage said sta tionary electric contacts.
3. ln an electric switch, a case, a cover on thel case, a rod centrally secured to the cover, a plunger mechanism slidable upon the rod', electric contacts stationary within the case, electric contacts carried by the plunger4 mechanism adapted to engage the first said velectric contacts, spring pressed members connecting with the plunger mechanism for accelerating the motion of said plunger mechanism, and' means for moving said plunger mechanism against the spring pressure.
. In an electric switclna case, a cover on the case, a rod centrally secured to the cover,
a plunger mechanism slidable upon the rod, electric contacts stationary within the case,
electric contacts carried by the plunger mechanism adapted to engage the rst said electric contacts, spring pressed members connected with the plunger mechanism ton.
accelerating the motion of said plungery mechanism, a lever in said case, a spindlecarrying said lever, a second lever external to the case and mounted on said spindle for actuating the plunger mechanism.
5. In an electric switch, a case, a cover on the .,case,`a 'rod centrally secured tothe cover, alplunger mechanism slidable upon the rod, electric contacts stationary within the case, electric contacts carried by the plunger fmechanism vadapted to engagethe first said electric contacts, spring pressed members connected with the plunger mechanism for accelerating the; motion of said plunger mechanism, a bifurcated lever engaging a ypin in said plunger mechanism for actuating said plunger mechanism, and means for actuating the lever.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two witnesses.
