Abstract
21,655. Horand, J. Sept. 25. Disk and wheel apparatus. - Relates to means for grinding the cutter chains of mortising - machines. T h e chain is first mounted upon rollers 29, 29a, Fig. 4, and has its teeth shaped by grinding- disks 6, 7 and set by a device 56. It is then transferred to the rollers 49, 49, Fig. 5, where the sides of the outer links are treated by the grinding-disk 35. The rollers 29, 29 are mounted upon a vertical slide 28, and the roller 29 is adjustable vertically thereon by means of a screw 30 to tension the chain. In order to move the chain transverselv across the grinding-disks, the slide 28 is carried by a transverse slide 17 mounted in a guide 18, fixed to the standard 4, and moved to and fro by a rack and pinion 16 on a shaft connected by gearing 15 to a shaft 14 which is driven by open and crossed belts. The belt-shifter 25 is worked by a bell-crank 24 carried by a spindle 23 and coupled to an arm 22 fixed on a bar 20. The bar is free to slide in brackets 19, and the slide 17 carries a lever 52 provided with a roller 51; as the slide approaches the ends of its stroke, the roller engages with stops 21 fixed on the bar which is then caused to move with the slide to effect the shifting of the belt. The engagement of the stops with the roller also causes the lever to turn upon its pivot and thus, by means of a stirrup 52; causes also the advance of the chain, tooth by tooth, under the grinding-disks. The outer end of the lever is connected to a weight 65 by a cord passing over a pulley. The slide 28 is adjustable vertically in the slide 17, to feed the chain towards the disks, by means of a screw 31 worked from the toothed wheel 32, which is advanced one tooth for each revolution of the chain by means of a pin fixed in one of its links; the pin is moved into the path of the wheel teeth by pressing one span inwards by means of a roller 53. The slide 28 is also capable of movement towards and away from the standard; upon completion of the grinding of the teeth, the slide is moved inwards by means of a screw 33 to bring the links into position for treatment by the setting- device 56, which consists of a resiliently-mounted grinding-block. For the purpose of facing the sides of the outermost links, the chain is transferred to the rollers 49, 49 and passed under the grinding-disk 35. The rollers are mounted on a bar 48, which is supported from a slide 37 movable to and fro on a guide 36 by a rack and pinion. Between the bar and the slide 37 are interposed a slide 43, which permits of adjustment parallel to the axis of the grinding- disk, and a slide 44 for the purpose of feeding the chain towards the disk; this slide is worked by a projection on the chain engaging a toothed wheel on the screw 45. The chain is advanced two links at a time under the grinding- disk bv mechanism worked by the movement of the slide 36. The bar 48 is set at a slight inclination to the plane of its reciprocating motion, so that the links are ground to a wedge shape, thicker on their outer than on their inner edges; it may also be turned about a pin 43 on the slide 37 to produce a backing-off.
