Be it known that I, JASPER. LATHIM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Castella, in the county of Shasta and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handhold-Rabbeting Machines, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to a hand hold rabbeting machine in which the work, assembled in close `proximity to cutting mechanism is fed into operative relation thereto and ejected from the machine by means of linkage and other devices.
The principal object of my invention 1s to provide a machine whereby suitable hand holds may be provided in box or crate ends, or the like, by rali beting, the machine b-eing automatic in its feeding and operation, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture of the receptacles and avoiding manyA of the dangers prevalent about devices where the feed of the wood into operative relation to the saw and during sawing action, is done manually.
Other objects of the invention are to provide such a machine as may be easily maintained in good repair; one susceptible of adjustment to the particular work at hand; and, one capable of yielding to forces ref sulting from abnormal material such as knotty wood, so that the parts are not subjected to stresses which might cause them to rupture.
Further objects of the invention will be pointed out in detail in the following def tailed description of the invention taken-` in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which v Figure '1 is a side elevation of a machine constructed according to my invention.

The frame A supports cutting mechanism B, embodying a saw 10 preferably of the width of the hand holds to be formed. The saw is secured in any suitable manner to a shaft 11 having pulleys 1Q and 13 rigid therewith, the latterpulley being adapted to receive motion from any suitable means, -such as line shafting, not shown in the drawing.
Surmounted upon frame A is a suitable work support C, this support being movable toward and from cutting mechanism B, such as by being oscillatable about the axis of a hinge 11. Longitudinally extending groove l5 is provided in the work support through which the working edge of the saw 10 may project beyond the plane of the support when it is swung toward the cutting mecha nism. A Ilongitudinally extending slot 16 is also provided, for a purpose to be subsequently set forth, directed toward the cutting mechanism. It is to be noted that, by particular reference to Fig. 3 of the draw ing, a portion of the work support extends at a considerable distance beyond one side of the base A to provide for the accommodation of mechanisms to be subsequently set forth,'the protruding portion of the support being braced by cross members 17.
Referring now to means for controlling the path of movement of the work over support C, such is designated generally by D and comprises a longitudinally extending element 1S extending in parallelism to the plane of saw 10 and at one side thereof. This element 18 serves as a lateral guide for the work and may be adjusted toward or from the saw, and held in its adjusted position by means of nuts 19 and bolts 20, both extending through transverse slots 21 in the element. A second elongated guide Aelement 22 is disposed at the other side of the saw 10 in parallelism to the plane thereof, this guide element 22 being adjustable toward or from the saw by quick acting mechanism designated generally by character D. This mechanism may comprise two screw threaded spindles 23 having screw threaded engagement with the element 22 as by entering transverse screw threaded apertures 24. The spindles 23 are revolubly mounted in bearings 25 and have secured thereto sprocket wheels 26 about which a chain 27 is trained. It will be seen that both spindles may be rotated in unison by imparting movement to the chain 27, the

guide element 22 being moved toward or from the saw 10, according to the direction of movement of the chain.
The means D is provided in order that the machine may be adapted to the particular work at hand, that is, so that a hand hold may be formed at the proper distance from the top and bottom marginal edges of the box or crate end, the work being fed between the guide elements 18 and 22.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing is shown a box end which has been operated upon, the box end being designated by the character H and the hand hold by character J. It is obvious from an inspection of the drawing that, by adjusting the guide element 18 the hand hold may be formed at the desired distance from the margin K cf the end II, and likewise, by adjusting the guide element 22 it may be formed at the desired distance from the margin L. In operation the face of the box end shown in Fig. 5 lies next adjacent to the upper face of work support C and the marginal edges K and L are guided by guide elements 18 and 22, respectively.
In order to hold the lowermost surface of the work in close engagement with the upper face of the work support while the cutting mechanism is operating upon the work, I provide a suitable roller 28 mounted on shaft 29, this shaft in turn being carried by a spring 30, preferably secured to guide element 18 as by pin 31. The roller 28 is disposed to one side of the guide element 18 next adjacent to saw 10 and its amplitude of movement toward the face of the work support is limited by adjustable pin 32, clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The spring 30 permits the roller 28 to yield somewhat as the work is fed into operative relation to the cutting mechanism B and, of course, the pin 32 is adjusted according to the thickness of the work, to provide for the best results.
I also find it desirable to provide a hooklike element to prevent the work returning, after having been moved into operative relation to the cutting mechanism, toward the ingress end of the machine. The element 33 is preferably carried by guide element 22 and has an inclined face 34 directed toward the approach to the saw and an abutment face 35 directed toward the saw 10. 'Ihe element 33 is yieldable and held in its ad-' with the guide elements as they are adjusted and, if desired, additional transverse supports 41 may be provided to bridge the guide elements if the space between the two is materially reduced or widened.
Referring now to mechanism for advancing the work into operative relation to the cutting mechanism B, such is designated generally by F and comprises a pusher 42 slidable upon work support C, having an extension 43 projecting through the hereinbefore mentioned slot 16, and linkage 44 operatively connected with the said extension and actuated in a manner to be hereinafter set forth. In order to adapt mechanism F to the particular work at hand, the extension 43 may be provided with a plurality of apertures 45 through any one of which may extend the pin 46` which also passes through link 47 of linkage 44. The pusher 42 is reciprocated back and forth and, upon its rearward movement, the work positions itself in front of the pusher to be advanced from the work rack E. j
A shaft 48 is provided for the dual purpose of actuating linkage 44 and operating work feeding mechanism GrV although it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular arrangement of parts disclosed forit is obvious that changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit ,of the invention as hereinafter claimed. The shaft 48, preferably j ournaled at one end ofthe frame A, as at 49, receives its movement from wheel 50 rigid with the shaft. The wheel 50'is rotated by abelt 51 trained thereabout and a pulley 52 on shaft 53 journ'aled as at 54. Shaft 53 receives its movement from wheel. 55, rigid therewith,
through belt 56 trained about the pulley 12 rigid with shaft 11. Shaft 48 carries a crank 57 operatively connected with'a link 58 which imparts movement to lever 59 pivoted as at 60. Oscillation of lever 59 is imparted to the pusher 42 through the hereinbefore referred to link 47. From the foregoing it is to be noted that, for each revolution of shaft 48, the pusher 42 is advanced toward cutting mechanism B and is retracted so that a new piece of work may fall into operative relation to mechanism F. 'Io prevent the lowermost piece of work from being retracted with pusher 42, by frictional engagement therewith, an adjustable stop 61, slightly higherthan pusher 42 is provided, mounted upon work support C. This stop has al longitudinallyv extending slot 62 through which passes the bolt 63 entering said support.
Concerning mechanism Gr it may comprise a cam 64 so shaped as to provide for movement of work support D asV hereinafter described which can be mounted on shaft 48; expansible means 65 interposed between cam 64 and work support C; and, guide 66 for means 65. The means may comprise a roller 67 mounted on shaft 68 passing through guide 66 and the bifurcation 68 of a yoke 69; a screw threaded spindle 70 having screw threaded engagement with yoke 69; and, a wheel 71 for actuating spindle 70. If desired, the work support C may rest directly upon hand wheel 7l, as clearly shown in the drawing. The throw section of cam 64 is provided to positively move the work support from the cutting mechanism B and it will be observed that mechanism F works at a positive velocity ratio with mechanism G so that the former brings the work into operative relation with the cutting mechanism B, while mechanism G allows the work support C to move, as by gravity, toward the cutting mechanism; the work is not advanced when said cutting mechanism is operating upon the work; and the work support C is positively raised while the finished work is being moved toward the egress end of the machine by the following work, actuated by mechanism F.
The operation of the machine is as follows A number of box or crate ends are accumulated in work rack E, the lowermost piece resting directly upon work support C, in advance of pusher 42. Movement is then imparted to pulley 13, revolving saw 10, and
1n turn imparting movement to shaft 48 through the belts and pulleys hereinbefore referred to. Crank 57 drawing upon link 58 causes lever 59 to swing about its pivot and through link 47 pusher 42 is drawn toward cutting mechanism D. During the first half revolution of shaft 47 the work support C is raised out of operative relation to cutting mechanism B and the work is moved under roller 28. After shaft 48 continues to revolve the pusher 42 is retracted and the work is prevented from moving with it by action of the hooklike element 38. At the completion of one' phase of movement of cam 64, the work support C has been raised and lowered and hence, if a piece of work is in operative relation to cutting mechanism B, a hand hold is rabbeted therein and it is only after the work support has been raised to bring the peripheral margin of saw 10 below the upper face of the work support that another piece of work is advanced into operative relation to the cutting mechanism, moving the completed work toward the egress end of the machine.
It is to be noted that, should movement be imparted to saw 10 in the wrong direction or exceedingly hard material encountered in the work, the work support C may yield upwardly oscillating about the pivot of pin 14, inasmuch as it rests freely upon the wheel 71. However, the weight of the work support C may be such as to cause it to move by gravity, following means 65 to provide for the rabbeting of normal material, or suitable means may be provided for causing the work support C to yieldably follow means 65. The gage, or depth of the hand hold may be adjusted by revolving screw threaded spindle 70 through the aid of hand wheel 7l.
I claim :n
1. A hand hold rabbeting machine comprising in combination, a. suitable frame, cutting mechanism carried thereby, a work support pivotally carried by said frame, means for controlling the path of movement of the work with respect to said support, a cam carried by said frame, an element actionable by movement of said cam, and a second element having a screw threaded shank in engagement with said last mentioned element and a head upon which said oscillatable work support freely rests, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a hand hold rabbeting machine, the combination of a suitable base, cutting mechanism carried thereby including a circular saw, a work support movable with respect to said cutting mechanism, an elongated guide element extending parallel to the plane of said saw at one side thereof and adjustable upon said work support, a yieldable element projecting beyond the plane of said guide element next adjacent to the plane of said saw and having an inclined face directed toward the approach to the saw and an abutment face beyond said inclined face, and means for adjusting the position of said yieldable element longitudinally of said guide element, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a hand hold rabbeting machine, the combination of a suitable base7 cutting mechanism carried thereby including a circular saw, a work support movable with respect to said cutting mechanism, a guide element extending parallel to the plane of said saw at one side thereof, adjustable upon said work support, a roller, means for yieldably mounting said roller upon said guide element to lie over said work support adjacent the said saw, and adjustable means for limiting the approach of said roller to the plane of said work support, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In combination with a frame having a rotary cutting means thereon, of a work supporting frame pivoted to said first named frame and adapted to move toward and away from the latter, the said supporting frame being adapted to have work fed thereover, means for moving said supporting frame, a spring arm on said holding frame. and a roller carried by said spring and adapted to yieldably engage the work during the cutting operation to press the same into engagement with the cutting means,
substantially as described.

In combination with a frame having a rotary cutting means thereon, of a work supporting frame pvoted to said Iii-st named frame and adapted to move toward and away from the latter, the said Work supporting frame being adapted to have Work fed thereover, means for moving said supporting frame, a spring arm on said snpporting frame, a roller carried by said spring and adapted to yieldably engage the Work during the Cutting operation to press the same into engagement with the cutting means, and a screw for adjusting the roller toward and away from the VWork, substanta-Hy as described.
