Abstract

21,233. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, [Soc. Anon. des Engrenages Citroen]. Sept. 19. Steering-gear; submarine vessels, special apparatus for steering.-Apparatus for actuating ships' rudders, particularly those of warships and submarines, comprises a single motor with clutch mechanism to each rudder and a slotted arm on each rudder post, on which slides a block in such a manner that the angular velocity of and couple on the rudder vary in a desired manner. The frame, on which the gearing is mounted, is freely carried by the rudder post and anchored by torque-rods. The shaft 1, Figs. 1 and 2, of immersion rudders has a slotted arm 2 in which slides a stud 4 of an arm 5 turning on an intermediate pivot 6. The arm 5 receives a constant angular velocity through mechanism 5<1>, 7, 8, 9 from a shaft 10 which is adapted to be coupled and uncoupled from a central constantly-running motor. The shaft 1 receives a velocity and couple which varies with the angle of the rudder. The driving-elements are uninfluenced by deformation in the hull since they are carried by a frame 11, 11<1> which is supported by a bearing 12 on the shaft 1 and is constrained by torque-rods 14 embodying a hydro-pneumatic brake 16 or resilient washer. The parts may be locked by a pin 15 if desired, A single electric motor drives through a clutch and gearing shafts upon which are gear-wheels rotating in opposite directions, and driving sets of wheels 26, 27, Fig. 5, which are free on shafts 28. Steel spiral springs 29, 30 attached to the wheels 26, 27 and are applied to drive or to be uncoupled from the boss 31, which is keyed on the shaft 28. The coupling and uncoupling is obtained by moving the collar 32 through mechanism from a hand-wheel 36. If the power plant is inoperative, the wheel 39 is used for mannal actuation. Each shaft 28 operates a rudder shaft 10 through bevel-gearing and a universal joint. Each set of apparatus has a locking-device.
