20,460. Pollacsek, E. Sept. 10. Impregnating-compositions.-Waste sulphite lye is mixed with lime and mineral oil for impregnating wood, hemp cables, &c. The lye is mixed with a slight excess of lime and evaporated until a froth is formed. A heavy rock oil distillate is then added drop by drop, and the excess of lime is removed by withdrawing the mixture of oil and lime salts from the surface of the liquid. The liquid is then evaporated, mixed with 5 per cent of heavy oil, and allowed to cool. To render the product insoluble in water, more oil is added until it consists of about 5 parts of oil to 4 parts of the product, whereupon 1À5 parts of lime paste are added and the mixture boiled. The product may be mixed with calcium hydrate, crude oil, and water.
