Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-A device for illuminating and advertising comprises a discharge tube containing neon and communicating with a chamber containing mercury ; the light emitted when the current is first passed is that due to the neon alone, but as the mercury vaporizes its light becomes predominant. The lamps are switched alternately on and off automatically or otherwise so as to give a succession of colours.
