Abstract
18,582. Guttenbrunner, G. Aug. 15. Sluice gates.-Relates to lock-gates through which ships may pass without any appreciable loss of water. Under normal circumstances, the gates are closed, but during the passage of a ship, the horizontally-sliding shutters of the gate press against the sides of the ship or of a receptacle enclosing it, and a vertically sliding shutter also forming a portion of the gate presses closely against the bottom of the ship or the receptacle enclosing it. After the vessel has passed the shutters close again. If the difference of level is small, the lock is dispensed with, and a single gate is employed as shown in Fig. 2, in which a vessel c is shown passing between the shutters a of the gate. The shutters a and the vertically moving shutter b shown in plan in Fig. 9, may be pressed back by the ship or the former may be operated by racks and the latter by winches. The shutters a, b are guided in masonry which carries flexible packing tubes D of hemp filled with a greasy material, these tubes being placed in slotted metal sockets D<1>.
