Abstract
18,073. Crafts, W. N. Aug. 8. Induction furnaces; electrode furnaces. - A shaft furnace comprises a basin 11 forming, with one or more U-shaped conductors situated beneath it, the secondary circuit of a transformer; the basin is located directly below the shaft and is adapted to contain the major portion of the metal discharged from the shaft. In the form shown, the conductors consist of channels 35 containing molten metal, and having a common limb 36; in a modification, permanentlv solid conductors are used. The primary coils 30 are wound on laminated cores 26, mounted in and spaced from metal tubes 25 embedded in the refractory body of the furnace. The cross-section of the channel 36 is made different from the sum of those of the limbs 35 to promote circulation by unequal heating. Air may he introduced by a tuyere 20, and gases removed by a fan 19. The furnace is provided with a working tap-hole 41, a slag tap-hole 40, and a tap-hole 42 for emptying the channels.
