Abstract

16,817. Jones, P. N. Aug. 1, 1912, [Convention date]. Tramcars; ingress and egress, controlling; floors and roofs; steps.-The entrance and exit doors 13, 14 respectively of street or other passenger cars are arranged at the sides of the car at a considerable distance apart, Figs. 1 and 9, to facilitate ingress and egress. The entrance doors 13 may be controlled by the conductor at 15, and the exit doors 14 by the motorman at 18. In two-deck cars, stairways 21, 22, Figs. 1 and 2, for passengers going up and down respectively, are provided at opposite sides between the doors. The lower deck, Fig. 1, may have central seats 26, and the upper deck, Fig. 2, side seats 29 ; or the side seats may be on the lower deck and the central seats on the upper. An extra seat 23 may be provided on the lower deck at the side not in use and extending under the stairway 21, and another seat 24 may be arranged against the stairway 22. Seats 25 may also be arranged on the upper deck over the stairways. Figs. 8 and 9 show modified arrangements of seats. In a single-deck car, seats may be provided at the sides of the car between each pair of doors, and folding seats on the doors may be let down on the side not in use. The motorman may be stationed on the upper deck at 18<a>, Fig. 2. The central floor space between the doors 13, 14, Fig. 1, is made lower than the floor of the end portions, and the corresponding roof portion of the upper deck is raised. The roof of the lower deck extends upwards under the longitudinal seats of the upper deck. In cars having longitudinal central seats on the upper deck, the ventilating-pipes for the lower deck may extend upwards between the backs of such seats and through the upper roof.
