Abstract

16,379. Elia, G. E. July 17, 1912, [Convention date]. Mines, marine.-Relates to firing-devices set in action by tripping-arms, and consists in the provision of a ratchet device to cause the firing to take place only after the arms have been deflected a given number of times, which happens when a ship encounters the mine, but not when a neighbouring mine explodes; the mines are thus made safe against sympathetic explosions. The tripping-arms are preferably all situated on one side of the vertical axis so as to act as rudders in water currents and so as not to retain weeds and floating bodies. As shown in Fig. 1, the arms v are connected by wires t to a pawl m in engagement with a ratchet-wheel k integral with a cam h. After a given number of steps, a notch j in the cam comes opposite the rear end of a spring catch c which thereupon releases the shoulder a of a firing-device of known construction.
