Abstract

19,811. Elia, G. E. Sept. 16, 1913, [Convention date]. Mines, marine.-Relates to firing-devices depending on the relative motion between an inertia device and the mine to cause the explosion of the mine when struck by a ship, and consists in the use of a fly-wheel, cylinder, or lever rotatable about an axis passing centrally therethrough and preferably also centrally through the mine. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a fly-wheel s is mounted on ball bearings on a cylinder k co-axial with the mine z, and is formed with a flange r coacting with rollers q at the end of levers o, which are pivoted at p and have noses n under a collar j on the firing- pin c. This has a square head f engaged in known manner by jaws g pivoted to the stem h of the shackle i to which the anchor cable is attached. The flange r of the fly-wheel has gaps through which the rollers q can escape when the wheel is turned to a certain position; but the wheel is normally locked in.a position where the rollers are retained by the flange, the locking being performed by a spring catch v, which is deflected to release the wheel by a spring plunger x when a plug 3 has been dissolved away by the sea water. When struck by a ship, the mine rolls, while the wheel s on account cf its inertia does not participate in this rotation ; this relative movement brings the rollers q in front of the gaps in the flange r through which they escape, the buoyancy of the mine causing them to swing to the dotted-line position and release the collar j, the continued action of the buoyancy of the mine causing in a known way the cocking of the spring e and the subsequent release of the firing-pin c from the jaws g to fire the detonator b. Accidental relative rotations are checked by a spring brake 1 acting on the fly-wheel. In one modification, the flywheel is placed outside the mine casing, and in other modifications, the explosive charge w is mounted on ball bearings and acts as the fly-wheel, and the flange r is arranged at the lower or upper end of the revoluble charge.
