Abstract

16,245. Charlesworth, C. July 15. Coupling.-A coupling which can be operated for connexion and disconnexion from a distance for salving sunken objects, anchoring air-ships, raising and lowering ship's boats, &c. comprises a bolt-piece which is caused to enter a block a and to be held therein by a series of pivoted hooks c controlled by springs d. The bolt-piece is guided into the block a by a conical mouth 0 and is drawn into the block by a guide cable j, or the block may be lowered over the bolt-piece without a guide-cable being used. Cables f, united at g, are connected to the hooks c so that the latter may be disengaged from the recessed base of the boltpiece by a pull on a control-line secured to the ring g. The block and bolt-piece are each secured to a lifting-cable. When the guide-cable j cannot be threaded through the block a, the block is slotted down one side and the guide-cable is passed through the slot after removal of a pulley q, and the pulley-bracket is adapted to be then moved across the slot in the block a so as to prevent the cable from leaving the block, a pin being provided to secure the pulley-bracket in place. The pin is connected by a cord to the shackle g, so as to be withdrawn to release the cable when the hooks c are disengaged.
