Abstract
A buoy which can be released from a submersible vessel is designed to carry a fine line to the surface so that the line may subsequently be used to guide an automatic grab down to engage lifting tackle on the submerged vessel. Used for recovery of submarines or probes unable to rise from the sea bed without aid. To minimise storage space, the line is of 'KEVLAR' (RTM - aromatic polyamide) filament or cord about 2mm dia, with a braking load of 300 kg. The grab, lowered from e.g. a shipboard crane, descends the line using internal guides of non-abrasive plastics material. The grab has a conical mouth which engages a conical head made of e.g. PVC to centralise the grab with a lifting coallar at the base of the line. Remotely operated explosive bolts may be used to release the buoy or secure the grab.
