Hank type.-Apparatus for dyeing, rinsing, soaping, and similarly treating hanks of yarn &c. comprises two parallel endless chains travelling in vertical planes and mutually supporting a series of frames, in each of which one or two reels, loosely supporting the hanks, rotate under the action of axial pinions gearing with horizontal racks, such rotation being opposite to and at a higher speed than that of the pinions, by means of intermediate gear. The hanks are only partly immersed in the treating-liquids, which are caused to move oppositely to the chains. Two baths 2, 3 containing dyeing-liquid and water respectively rest between the sides 1 of the apparatus at the bottom, and above these is mounted a soap or like bath 4; the reels H, half immersed, are caused to travel, with the hanks they carry, slowly through the baths. The inner end of each reel-spindle is carried in a square hole 12 in one end of a doubleeuded carrier sleeve 7, Fig. 8, attached to the central bar 6 of a frame 5, the internal sleeve 9 being freely rotatable, and a spring arrangemcnt being provided to allow the reel-spindle to be inserted and withdrawn. The outer end of each spindle, also square, fits an opening in a gear-wheel z<4>, Figs. 5 and 7, which rotates freely on its axis, but is geared with an internally-toothed wheel 16, fast on the same axis, through an intermediate gear-wheel z<8>. Also fixed to the same axis is a pinion z<6> which is rotated by fixed racks z<7> at the side of the machine, the whole gear giving the carriers H. the desired rapid rotation in the direction opposite to that of the travel. Chain-guide drums z<9>, z<10>, z<11> enable the carriers to he moved from one bath 2 to the next 3.
