This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for treating threadsof collodion yor like filaments with'reagents or other suitable liquids, in order to denitrate, bleach, dyeor Esimilarly treat suchthreads under the best conditions of uniformity and regularity. The'reagents which act upon the threads circulate through the mass oi" the latter under the action of vcentrifugggal force, the threads tok bey treated being,r suspended vaxially and swiftly rotated in compartments containingr the liquid. In order to putin practice this invention thev bobbinsusually employed in twisting machines are replaced by bobbins of small Idiameter provided with two or more rings of radiating points, from which the mass of ,twisted thread is suspended freely in order to undergo the subsequent liqu".d treatn ments 1n an open condition.

Tbebest way to circulate theliquid reagenttlirough. all the threads is by the use ot centrifugal power. For this purpose the bobbins, suitably isolated, might be mounted `on supports within a centrifugalmachine with liquid circulation, such as used for washing lcertain chemicals, for nitrating cotton, etc.. but it is preferred to make the bobbins .rotate on themselves within the reagents inthe special apparatus forming part ot this inrention.` y

In Fig. 4 it is assumed that one of the compartments H is lilled W."th`.bobbins on a spindle J rotated `by 'the means indicated or other suitable driving gear, arid that on the Nether side the driving gear has; been stoppedV in order to replace treated bobbins (just de- "nitrated for example) by others carrying fresh thread to be treated.

` The vertical pulleys I on the rotary spindles J, With their bobbins, are set yin motion through belts or ropes j by means of a drivingr drum K, placed over the top of the machine cxtencling over its Whole length and driven by a pulley M or other convenient means.
Each` pulley I is carried 1n a movable frame N pivoted or hinged at k. It is thus possible to swing back each frame N as shown on the. right hand side ofFig. 4 in order yto reach a compartment and remove one set of bobbins and replace it by another.
In such ease, the pulley I occupies a lower position but remains vertical, its axle being in line with its spindle J as shown on the left hand side of Fig. 4. The vertical spin-l.

The treatment of bobbins inside the apparat-us takes place in the following manner The series of bobbins strung on the spindles J are wedged between the plates i screwed on the ends oit therods, andloW- ered into the tank compartments H; the spindles J are then connected to the axles of the pulleys I and allowed to `hang freely from them; the liquid ,reagent is next admitted to the compartments, such 'reagents for instance as those used to denitrate the collodion threads, to bleach, them, or eventuallyA dye them. All the spindles J with their bobbins are rotated simultaneously by starting the top horizontal'shaftv K. When the operation is completed the reagent is run oft' by means of the tap 77, and Water is admitted intothe tank to wash the thread,
Whilel the rotation ot the bobbins is continued. Next the water is runv off and rotation is maintained in order to dry partially, `through centrifugal force the treated threads on the bobbins.
When this partial drying is finished, the mot-ion of the shaft K is stopped, the damp bobbins are taken ofi' and left to dry in Warm -ing ofi the thread from above, nearly following the line of the bottom axle. In this Way the thread leaving,lr the bobhin never catches inthe curved points b which are bent in a backward circumferential direction. The curved points during the un- 'winding have no other function except that of supporting the whole mass of threads on the bohbin. 'l
'The apparatus can be employed to dye threads on bobbins as described or it can be arranged so as'to dye in small lots, by operating independently in each compartment ll. ln this case all the compartments ll are isolated from each. other and do not communicate at the bottom and cach has its own outlet tap y). y
Under these conditions, in order to preservethe homogeneonsness of the bath all over and along the whole height of each compartment. the liquid circulating in tbe bobbin is moved not only through cenlri'fugal `force as previously described, but
' side compartments, so A (see Fig. 5) a pipe O passing through the warm Water in the tank G and opening into the top and bottom of the compartment.
In order now that the disks z' i which are mounted on each spindle J will not form an obstacle for the free circulation of the liquid in the interior of the compartment, but will promote the circulation of the liquid, the plain disks are replaced by small `disks r with blades to act as Apropellers.
These propellers y, one of which is shown in` Fig. 6, are fixed'on of the bobbins, and, rotating with it, displace the Aliquid vertically in each compartment H. y e
It the apparatus is employed for dyeing purposes in several of the compartments, they may be placed in communication by means of side tubes and the dye liquor circulated throughout them.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent inthe United States is zl. The improved apparatus for treating with liquids, artificial silk and like threads, comprising a tank divided into a middle longitudinal. compartment and two series of the middle compartment adapted to contain water maintained at the required temperature by suitable means, and the side compartments adapted to contain the liquid reagent, series of bobbins adapted to have threads to be treated wound. thereon, a rotary spindle suspended disposed, and means for rotating said spindle in such manner that the rotation of the eelt-centering spindles insures an'active circulation of the liquid reagent throughout the threads upon the bobbins substantially as herein set forth.

In apparatus for treating artificial silk and the like with reagents, the combination comprising a tank divided into amiddle longitudinal compartment and series of side compartments, the middle compartment adapted to contain water maintained at the required temperature by'suitable means, and the side compartments adapted to contain the liquid reagents, series of bobbins adapted to have threads to be treated Wound thereon, a rotary spindle suspended verti cally and hanging freely upon which said bobbi ns are disposed, means for rotating said the vertical spindles J l ments, series vertically and hanging freely upon which 'said bobbins arey 'in the spindle, and a frame carrying said means for causing rotation arranged to shift said means to` inoperative position. In apparatus for treating artiiicial'silk and the like with reagents, the combination comprising a tankdivided into a middlelongitudinal compartmentand series of side compartments, the middley compartment adapted to contain water maintained at the required temperature by suitable means, and the side compartments adapted to contain the liquidreagents, said side compartments having partitions extending downward but not reaching the bottom, and the bottom sloping longitudinally of saidl compare ments, means fOrv draining said comparte of bobbins adapted to have threads to be treated Wound thereon, a 'rotary spindle suspended vertically and hanging freely in said side compartments upon which said bobbins are` disposed, and means for rotating said spindle.
