Abstract

10,873. Ges. f³r Elektro-Osmose, and Schwerin, Graf B. May 8. [Addition to 23,545/12.] Electric apparatus for carrying out the process of extracting water from substances such as peat and clay by electroosmotic action, described in the parent Specification, comprises one or more chambers of constant volume between perforated electrodes, to which the material is supplied under pressure. Filter cloths may be placed over the adjacent faces of the electrodes, and the apparatus may have the form of a filter-press. The perforated electrodes 6 may be of opposite polarities, or may be of the same polarity and be placed on opposite sides of an imperforate electrode 11. A series - parallel or parallel circuit arrangement may be adopted; in the latter case, only one set of electrodes need be insulated from the frames of the press. A reversing-switch is provided, in order to allow of the removal from the electrodes of substances such as chalk or ferric hydroxide, which tend to choke the filter cloths when peat or clay is being treated. The electrodes may be of hard lead. Only a small pressure, say one atmosphere, is required ; under some conditions, suction may be employed. The liquid to be treated enters through slots in the open frames of the press, and the water escapes through gaps 10 in the rims of the closed frames.
