Abstract
145,045. Elektro-Osmose Akt.-Ges. (Graf Schwerin Ges.). Jan. 9, 1915, [Convention date]. Filter presses. - During the leaching or washing of animal, vegetable, or mineral substances by liquid forced through under pressure, an electric current is passed through them, to assist in the transport of the liquid in a direction dependent on the electro-positive or electronegative character of the material. As shown, the material 8 is placed between perforated electrodes 3, 4 through which the liquid enters and leaves the material respectively. The electrodes, which may be faced with filtering material 5, 6, are clamped at their edges between a frame 9 and two plates 10 having ribs 7 bearing against the electrodes. Passages 1, 2 serve for the supply and escape of the liquid. A number of frames and plates may be arranged in a series and may be used as an ordinary filter-press, inlets being formed in the frames 9. Any electrolytic product liberated at the electrode through which the liquid enters is washed away either periodically or by allowing a part of the liquid to flow continuously away from that electrode.
