Abstract

The suspension is subjected to an electric field between two electrodes of opposite polarity. Particles migrate by electrophoresis to become deposited on one electrode from which tye are scraped and collected as a practically dry sludge. The electrode on which particles are deposited is pref. alternately immersed in the suspension for deposition and then brought out for scraping. An electrode in the form of a rotating disc conveniently provides the alternating cycle. The process can be effected with a batch of suspension which is processed until satisfactorily sepd. Alternatively the process plant can receive a continuous supply of incoming suspension, sepd. liq. being recycled into incoming suspension until purified. Used for sepg. solid particles from liq. suspension, partic. colloidal particles in biological sludge arising from the purificn. of industrial and/or domestic waste water. Used also as an industrial separator to replace filter presses in the paper-making and rubber industries. System provides a sludge dried to only a few per cent moisture content, and does not rely on filters which rapidly block and lose efficiency.
