Abstract

1415000 Treating liquids electrolytically PACIFIC ENG & PRODUCTION CO 15 Dec 1972 58062/72 Heading C7B An aqueous electrolyte having ions and/or molecules the solubility of which decrease with increasing alkalinity is electrolytically treated in a cell having a pair of spaced apart parallel electrodes connected to a D.C. source by flowing the electrolyte vertically upwardly through the space between the electrodes and intermittently injecting a gas (e.g. air) under pressure into the bottom of the cell to discharge from its top, the gas flow being maintained at a level producing bubbles of diameter greater than the spacing between the electrodes. The electrolyte may be sewage or industrial waste water. As shown cylindrical cathode 10 and anode 11, e.g. of graphite or Ti coated with PbO 2 , are supported and separated by insulator 13 and bolted respectively to electrical connectors 17, 18. Compressed air is introduced at 20, and electrolyte enters at 15 and leaves at 16. Gas flow may be controlled by solenoid operated valve 23 with timing device 24. Cells may be used in series. Electrodes may be flat sheets.
