Turning-gear.-The starting-switch lever a used to close the circuit of an electric motor B which turns the engine is locked against movement by a bar i bearing on the lever e which in turn bears on the notched cam d, until the spark control lever is moved to the spark-retarding position, whereupon a connexion from the spark-control lever withdraws the locking-bar When the lever a is moved, the cam d acts on the lever f, which through the spring m and Bowden mechanism n moves a lever p and locks the spark-control lever in its retarded position. The lever a also moves the wheels l l<1> axially to bring them into gear with the wheels l<2>, l<3> and the wheel o<1> on the engine shaft, so as to connect the motor and engine. The spring m allows the motor circuit to be dosed before the wheels move into gear, should the teath not mesh immediately. The lever a may simultaneously throw the ignition over from a magneto to a battery and coil. Rigid mechanism may replace the Bowden mechanism.
