8959. Marks, E. C. R., [Veitscher Magnesitwerke Akt.-Ges.]. April 16. Roofs; walls.-Furnace walls and roofs are built of magnesite bricks with a mortar consisting of magnesite, lime, and water, to which has been added a large proportion of iron turnings or like material which, when hot, forms a slag with the mortar or the bricks, or both, and causes the mortar to increase in volume and compensate for the shrinkage of the bricks. Filling-pieces 2 of iron, or turnings, or mill and forge scale, may be added to the mortar. The inner surfaces of the walls may be coated with fire-resisting lining 3, consisting of magnesite, lime, and water with a lesser proportion of iron. A binding-material such as tar or lime-milk is used in mixing the mortar &c. The filling-pieces 2 should project beyond the joints of the bricks, and the roofs should be built with special bricks 5.
