Abstract

6485. Heydt, T. March 15. Chairs with separate jaws; sleepers, securing rails to; chair keys and wedges.-Rails are secured by clamps retained by a device contained in a chamber which is closed in on both sides and at the rear and has a cover to secure the retaining-device, which consists of a block, a number of vertical wedges, or molten metal. The chamber may be formed on the sleeper or on a base-plate secured to the sleeper. The molten metal h may fill the chamber or entirely surround the clamp c, being poured through a hole in the cover d, the metal filling this hole and so retaining the cover, which may extend over the clamp. The metal may also be poured through a hole 12 in the clamp to engage the rail base. The cover may have a dovetail engagement with the exterior or interior of the sides r of the chamber. The rear wall t may slide in grooves in the sides r. The metal may be removed by melting, or mechanically by a screw-borer, which may also be used to engage a threaded hole in the blocks v, in which case the cover d is secured by a screw n. The wedges o may project above the end wall, and may be lifted out by notches q. The clamp may have a dovetail engagement with the chamber, and may have projections preventing the liquid metal from entering the dovetail recess.
