Type - lever actions; accenting - arrangements ; heyboards.-The accenting-types are mounted on the same carriers as the ordinary types, and the shift-mechanism controls interponents for converting the keys from normal keys which operate the letter-spacing mechanism to dead-keys. The arrangement simplifies the keyboard as the accenting-types can be paired in any convenient manner with the ordinary types. The arrangement is shown applied to a type-lever action. The accenting-types x are mounted on the same levers 3 as the ordinary types y, and each of the accenting- key levers 5 is provided with a pivoted interponent 14 coupled to the shift-frame 1 and adapted to engage the letter-spacing universal bar 15, the interponents being arranged over notches in the key-levers. The couplings consist of a bell-crank lever 9, 11 connected by a pin-and-slot 12<a> and a spring 13 to a link 12 on the interponent. When the shift-frame is in the normal position, impression is from the ordinary types y and the interponents engage the universal bar. For typing accents, the shift-frame is raised, thereby moving the interponents to the position shown and preventing operation of the universal bar. The pin-and-slot connexion enables the shift-frame to return independently of the universal bar. In a modification the accenting-types are arranged for impression when the platen is in the normal position, the interponents in this case being normally idle.
