Abstract

5568. Ralph, G. J. March 6. Explosive gases, detecting.-A device suitable for attaching to an electric hand lamp for indicating the presence of fire-damp &c. comprises a wire of catalytic material arranged in series with a second conductor to form two arms of a wheatstone bridge the other two arms consisting of two resistances connected by a low-resistance slide wire. In the form shown, current from a battery A may be supplied to a lamp B through a switch C or to the bridge D, E, F, G through a switch P, which is preferably a spring contact closed only while pressure is applied. The wires D, E are preferably normally of equal resistance and are in parallel with relatively high resistances F, G connected by a low-resistance wire H, which is engaged by a contact slide K and is preferably arranged around a circular block of wood &c. In the presence of gas, the resistance of the wire D increases, and the amount of gas present is indicated by the adjustment of the slide K that is required to bring the galvano eter needle J back to zero. The resistance H and slide K may be placed in a flame-tight box M attached to the galvanometer. According to the Provisional Specification, a lamp may replace the wire E.
