Abstract

237,970. Martienssen, O., and Ges. f³r Nautische Instrumente Ges. May 5,1924. Gas analysis.-Apparatus for indicating the presence of explosive and combustible gases in the air comprises a gas-absorbing body of catalytic material in the form of a wire or band prepared for use by the deposit thereon at one or more points of a metal of the Pt or Pd group and electrically heated so as just to glow visibly at the points not prepared, the presence of gas being indicated solely by the prepared parts of the body becoming brighter and the amount of gas by the degree of brightness. The deposit is preferably produced by evaporating to dryness a drop of a salt solution of the metal on the heated wire or band. As shown, the wire is enclosed in a perforated glass globe G surrounded by a glass cylinder M closed by highly porous stones S, S' and asbestos packing-rings D, a perforated metal mantle F holding the parts together; the wire is heated by current from an accumulator in a casing U, gas reaching the wire through the stones S, S'. A variable resistance is placed in the circuit. The wire may be of platinum or of an alloy of platinum and a metal of the platinum group, such as rhodium or ruthenium, having a higher melting point than platinum, and preferably has a diameter of .06 to .08 millimeters. Specifications 3362/87, [Class 38, Electricity, Regulating &c.], 133/14, [Class 39 (ii), Electric lamps, Incandescent], and 213,587 are referred to.
