Abstract

124,453. Shakespear, G. A. Jan. 4, 1916. Explosive and combustible gases, detecting.-In apparatus for detecting the presence of a known constituent in a gaseous mixture, such as hydrogen in the atmosphere of an air-ship shed, or methane in the atmosphere of a coal mine, similar electric conducting - wires c are arranged in cavities a, a<1> of a metal block, one of the cavities a being closed, and the other cavity a' communicating by small perforations d with the atmosphere. Current from a battery g is passed through both wires, which are inserted in different arms of a Wheatstone bridge as shown, and a balance is secured by means of the other resistances e, e<1>, under which conditions the heated wires remain at similar temperatures by losing heat at the same rate. An alteration in the proportion of the constituent in question in the atmosphere will cause a variation in the rate of loss of heat of the exposed wire, of which the change of resistance as determined by re-adjusting the bridge is a measure.
