Abstract

5325. Verschuren, A. March 2, 1912, [Convention date]. Sweeping-machines; taking up mud and refuse for removal.-Relates to street-sweeping machines in which the sweepings are brushed into a trough, and conveyed thence by a conveyer to a collecting-bin adapted to be raised and tipped, and consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts described. The machine is mounted on a power - driven vehicle and carries a rotary brush 9 which is mounted on an axle driven by gearing from the rear axle 10 of the vehicle so that it sweeps the dirt up a plate 12 and on to an endless band 13 also driven from the rear axle 10. This band conveys the sweepings to a semicylindrical trough 22 extending from side to side of the vehicle. A pair of bucket scoops 24, mounted on arms 25 which rotate on a shaft co-axial with the trough and driven from the axle 10, scrape the sweepings out of the trough and tip them into a bin 23 mounted on wedge-shaped trunnions 41. To insure complete discharge of the contents of the scoops, these are made quadrantal in crosssection and carry pivoted leaves 33 which are caused to rotate and tip out the contents by the engagement of arms 34 with a cam-surface 35 fixed to the frame. Bent rods 36 are rotatably mounted in vertical sleeves 40 on the bin 23 so that they may be swivelled backwards, and their eyes 37 are connected by pivot pins 38 to brackets 39 on the frame in order that the bin may be hauled by rope- and-pulley tackle 43, 45 into the dotted-line position to discharge its contents down an incline 46 into a separate cart. A water-tank 3 on the machine delivers water through the pipe 4 to an ordinary watering-tube 5 extending transversely across the vehicle. The axle of the brush 9 may be raised by a system of levers 11 out of contact with the road surface. A modification is described adapted to be propelled by band. The bucket conveyer of this device has only one bucket. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) comprises also a rotary brush 57, 58, Fig. 5 (Cancelled), having two side plates, rigidly secured to the frame of the brush, between which plates is secured a ring of blocks 60 carrying the bristles 50. The plates have three concentric rings of holes 54, 55, 56 adapted to receive screw-bolts 53 for locking the blocks to the plates. As the bristles of the brush wear, the diameter of the brush is kept fairly constant by transferring the screw bolts from the inner to the outer rings of holes, additional bristle-blocks being introduced to complete the expanded ring of blocks. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
