Abstract
29,804. Fairweather, W. C., [Underwood Typewriter Co.]. Dec. 27. Tabulating-mechanism; tabulating-key actions.- Relates to column-selecting and denominationaltabulating mechanism. (1) The mechanism shown can select five columns, and comprises four columnselecting keys 33 and five column-stops 18 pivoted at 26 to mounts 27 on the stop-rack 19, the first four column-stops being provided with fingers 28, 28<a>, 28<b>, 28<c> which are of graded lengths and respectively project over four, three, two, and one of a series of cams 29 formed on slides 31 connected to the levers 32 of the keys 33. When one of these keys, for example " 3," is depressed, the second cam 29 from the rear is lifted and during the run of the carriage the fingers 28, 28<a> engage this cam and the first and second column-stops are raised above the projected denomination stop 16. The third finger 28b, however, does not engage the cam, and the carriage is thus arrested in the third column by the engagement of the third column-stop with the projected denomination-stop, the denomination depending on which denomination-key 11 is depressed. The columnselecting and denomination-keys are depressed simultaneously and are held until the carriage is arrested. The cams are formed with inclines 42, 44, the inclines 44 permitting the carriage to be returned if a cam has been left projected. The last column-stop is not provided with a finger and need not be pivoted. The levers 32 are of graded lengths and each engage one of the slides 31, these being recessed at the bottom so that each lever can operate only one slide. The slides are guided by an attachment bracket 30, the cams being formed with ears which rest on the top of the bracket. The levers of the denomination-keys are preferably mounted on the pivotspindle 14 of the levers 32, the two sets of levers being nested. (2) In order that the carriage can be arrested in the decimal-point position in each column without operating the decimal-point key, the decimal stop 16<x> is formed with a lug 34 engaging a shoulder 35 on each slide 31, so that on operation of any of the column-selecting keys the decimal stop 16<x> is automatically projected and arrests the carriage unless another denomination-stop has been projected. (3) Each of the mounts 27, Fig. 5, for the stops consists of a sleeve provided with a sliding bolt 56 formed with teeth 55 to engage the teeth 45 of the rack 19. The sleeve consists of a channelled member 47 and a cap 49 secured together by a screw 51 and the pivot screw 26. The bolt is provided with a knob 57 and is pressed inwards by a spring 58 arranged in a boss 59 on the cap. The cap is formed with flanges 50 which fit over the teeth of the rack. The top of the mount is bevelled to an edge which reads a scale on the top of the rack. The column-stops are each held in normal position by a spring 62, Fig. 6, which presses the tail 65 of the stop against the mounts, the spring being seated in a recess 63 in the stop and being provided with a bearing-ball 64.
