Abstract

27,589. Glen, E. A. Nov. 30. [Cognate Applications, 29,012/12 and 11,563/13.] [Addition to 28,457/08 and 19,459/10.1 Channels i n engine' crank - casings.-The apparatus for lubricating internal-combustion engines described in the parent Specifications is modified by dispensing with the ball inlet valve, and by coupling the double valve T with the plug E of the admission tap. A part of the plug is made eccentric or cranked, and is connected to the valve by a strap or chain, so that the actuation of the valve T is positive in one or both directions. When the connexion is a rigid one the spring S may be omitted. To ensure that the engine is not started until the oil-hole H is uncovered, the tap E may be connected with the sparking-plug of the engine in such a way that, if the tap is not turned into the proper position, the sparking-plug is short-circuited. The oil-feed pipe, described in' Specification 19,459/10, is closed at the end and is provided with one or more slits along its length to prevent the entrance of solid matter. To provide a pipe of large bore with the requisite resistance to air and oil, the pipe is partitioned or honeycombed by fixing within it a solid bar, or one or more telescopic tubes, or one or more balls engaging notched or roughened seats. To regulate the quantity of oil admitted to the crank chamber, according to the speed or the load on the engine, an adjustable device is placed in front of the outlet of the pipe or bore, by which oil enters the crank chamber from the reservoir, to break up the film of oil carried round by the fly-wheels and disturb the liquid-sealing effect of the oil on the outlet of the pipe or bore. This device may take the form of a ridge on a screw or plug let into the wall of the crank-case, and preferably operated automatically by a connexion with the throttle valve admitting fluid to the engine ; by turning the plug, the film of oil is more or less broken up, and more or less air is pumped into the reservoir to displace oil.
