Abstract
27,521. Macnicol, A. N. July 13, [Convention date]. Cleaners for mechanically removing incrustation.-In apparatus for cleaning iron and other surfaces such as the sides and bottoms of ships, of the kind comprising means whereby the apparatus is self-propelled and is held in contact with the surface during the operation by electro-magnets, steering-mechanism being provided to retain the apparatus in the line of travel, one or more electro-magnets 1 are mounted on a frame, and provided with U- shaped cores 3 fitted at their ends with rollers 4 which rest against the surface. Rotating brushes 6, 6<a> are driven by an electric motor 24, or by a compressed-air engine inside one of the brushes. Reciprocating scrapers may be arranged in front of the brushes at each end of the machine, resilient connexions being provided to enable the scrapers to override any obstruction, or centrifugal scrapers may be used. The machine is suspended from runners connected to one of the magnet cores and mounted upon a ledge or projection fitted to the ship. Driving-rollers or grooved pulleys 60 are carried by a bracket 59 extending from the frame 2, and engage with a rope 55 supported along the length of the ship. Levers 66 engage at one end with the rope and are pivoted to arms 64 connecting the spindles 65 of the rollers 4, which are swivelled at 71, so that the apparatus may be kept in line with the rope. In a modification, a single large brush is mounted between the magnets, and smaller brushes are arranged between the pole-pieces and the the scrapers. A float may be mounted on the machine for working under water, and an indicator may be provided for determining the depth of the machine under the water. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) describes also a form in which the machine is held to the surface to be cleaned by the reaction of a jet of water. This forms the subject-matter of the divided application 19,746/13, and does not appear in the complete Specification as accepted.
