Abstract

26,386. Haddan, R., [National Cash Register Co.]. Nov. 16. Type-wheel machines; hammer - impression arrangements; line-spacing mechanism. - Relates to the provision of means in cash registers for accumulating totals upon total type - carriers and for printing the total, together with constant matter, by means of an independent impressionhandle, upon two tutal strips, one strip being retained in the machine and the other being fed out of the machine to provide a detachable slip. The invention is shown as applied to a key set and operated machine of the coupler type. Upon manual operation of the total-printing handle 82, Fig. 2, a spring tappet 84 co-operates with an arm 74 to rock a platen frame 63, Fig. 1, about its pivot 64 and thereby depress a platen 65 upon the two total record-strips coming from supply rolls 42, 43 and so force them against total type-wheels 7, ink-ribbons 55 being iuterposed. Upon the return or downward movement of the handle, no movement of the platen-operating parts occur, but a ratchet movement derived from the toothed segment 96 is effective to rotate a take-up roll 54 for the retained strip and a feedroll 51 whereby both strips are fed, the strip for detachment passing out against a serrated plate 54<a>. The feeding movement is made in two steps, and between them the operator depresses a knob 121 upon a spring-mounted electrotype plate 116, thereby imprinting, with the aid of an endless ink-ribbon, spacing-lines and constant letterpress upon the record strips. When the feeding movement is completed, the strips, bearing imprints of the total and of the constant matter, pass over a table 53 in order that an official may write his signature &c. upon them. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-The endless ink-ribbon for the electrotype plate passes around rods at either side, one rod having a ratchet-wheel engaging a spring-controlled pawl pivoted to the totalprinting platen frame whereby the ribbon is fed as the frame is moved downwards. In the case of the total type-wheels, the endless ink-ribbon 55, Fig. 6, passes around a feed-wheel 56, having pins 90 for engagement with a spring pawl 88 upon an arm attached to the impression-handle spindle, both the feed-wheel and the guide-bars around which the ribbon passes having adjustable means. Counting-apparatus.-The number of operations of the total impression-handle is registered by means of an ordinary counter 125, the reading of which is written upon the strips by the official.
