[Class 106 (i)] Verifying perforated records cards; recording special marks.- A verifying-machine of the type in which the cards are verified column by column by means of a keyboard and a card carriage is escaped step-by-step as verification proceeds and with means for indicating non-verification (e.g. the escapement is rendered inoperable) is characterized by a recording device (" V " type rod 71, Fig. 5) which is operated to make a record in the card column being verified only when a key depressed agrees with a hole in the column. The card is fed to the left, Figs. 3 and 4, each column being read in succession by a column of verifying pins 14. Resting on each pin 14 is a lever 11, the left end of which is fulcrumed. against a pin 12 pressed down by a spring 13 and the right end of which may be depressed by depressing the coacting key 10. If the key depressed corresponds to the hole in the card column, the pin 14 passes fully downwards through the card T and the lever fulcrums about its pin 12 so as to rock counterclockwise a bail 16 on a shaft 17. This operates escapement pawls 20, 23 to allow the card carriage 26 to escape one column to the left. If there is not a hole corresponding to the key depressed then the pin 14 operated by this key is arrested by the card material ; lever 11 fulcrums them about pins 14 raising the pin 12 and bail 16 is not depressed sufficiently to release the escapement pawls. For correct verification, when bail 16 is fully depressed it also lowers a lever 74 which is rigid with it and pivots about the shaft 17. A lever 73 pivoted to lever 74 thus depresses a type pin 71 against a spring 72. Pin 71 carries a V-shaped type at its lower end and presses an ink ribbon R against the card T so as to print a V, Fig. 5, at the foot of the correct column. The pressure of type pin 71 may be varied by a screw 76. The card carriage 26 is moved to the left by a spring motor 28 gearing with teeth 30 on the carriage. As a slide 39 is moved manually to the left to feed the next card from the magazine, a clutch is automatically thrown in, which moves the carriage rack 26 to the right through a gearwheel 58 until the new card lies between abutments 32, 33 on the carriage with its left-hand column beneath the verifying pins 14. As rack 26 moves to the right it winds up the escapement spring 28. As the slide 39 moves left it winds up a spring which returns it to the right when the operator releases the slide. The inking ribbon R passes through a guide 65 housed in a guide frame 64 rigid with a block 60 which is fastened to the machine frame 34 by screws 61. The ribbon passes from spool 62 to spool 63, both mounted on block 60. As a new card is fed from the magazine by moving slide 39 to the left, the latter meets a lug 82 on a slide 84 and moves this latter to the left against its spring 85. Slide 84 has a pin-and-slot connection 86 with a lever 87 carrying a pawl 88 which thereby feeds the inking ribbon one step. When spool 62 is empty, button 95 may be pressed to remove pawl 88 and retrograde pawl 93 from ratchet 91 and handle 99 is then rotated to rewind the ribbon from spool 63 to spool 62. If a column is not intended to have a perforation, a space key 10-S is pressed which, through bell-crank 78, causes a link 79 to rock the lever 74 and bail 16 so that the carriage escapes and a " V " is printed.
