This invention relates to accounting machines and similar business machines, andis directed particularly to the recording means of such types of machines. Y A
The invention is embodied in machines of the general type shown in the followin United States Letters Patents, and reference may be had to them for a complete showing and description ofstandard mechanisms not disclosed herein; United States Patents Nos. 1,619,796; 1,747,397; and 1,761,542, issued March 1, 1927, February 18, 1930, and June 3, 1930, respectively, to Bernis V1. Shipley; No. 2,175,346, issued October 10, 1939, to
Maximilian M. Goldberg; No. 2,141,332, issued December 27, 1938, to Charles H. Arnold; No. 1,693,279, issued November 27, 1928, to Walter J. Kreider; and No. 2,361,662, issued October 31, 1944, to Pascal Spurlino and Konrad Rauch.
More particularly, the invention relates to insertable carrying frames for listing tapes of the general type shown in the above mentioned Spurlino-and Rauch Patent No; 2,361,662.
Machines of this particular type, and embodying the present invention are well adapted for use in banks, and especially in the proof departments thereof, where the various items are listed and distributed, and deposits checked for proof balance at the end of each day.

The insertable carrying frames for the listing tapes, as illustrated in the above mentioned Spurlino and Ranch patent are provided, each with a single listing tape and impression means cooperatingwith that tape, whereas in the present invention each of the insertable'carrying frames is provided with a plurality of listing tapesand a plurality of impression means cooperating with those tapes. J
Since many banks require their lists of checks or items paid by another bank to be accompanied by a printed list of checks paid by a bank, when these checks are sent back to the banks on which they are drawn, the present invention with the plurality of listing tapes in each of the insertable frames provides the proof departments with a large number of individual tapes upon which the individual lists of groups of items'may be printed without having to increase the number of sets of type Wheels now on the machine.
Therefore, in use in connection with these and other requirements of the banks, a machine which prints individual lists of groups of items, along with other identification data on deposit slips which may be imprinted in connection with the machine of the Spurlino and Rauch type, and the totals of. the distributed items, is not 12 Claims. (01.101-96) only a great time-saver for the employees of the bank, but also provides accurate machine-printed results immediately at the close of the day's business, and with the plurality of tapes in each of the insertable frames, the efiiciency of the department is greatly increased in that they can handle many more groups of checks from many more banks than has been done in the past.
It is, therefore, one object of this invention to provide an accounting machine with means for distributing-items into a plurality of classifications, and also to provide a plurality of insertable listing tape frames, each frame being provided with a plurality of listing tapes or detail strips for recording the items of such classifications. v
Another object is to provide means'for selecting one of said tapes of each of the frames to receive the printed data from an item, said selection being controlled by the selection of the classification totalizer, which receives said item.
A further object is to provide a plurality of impression means carried by each of said insertable frames, each of the impressionmeans being associated with one of the individual listing tapes or detail strips of its respective removable frame.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a common actuating or operating means for the plurality of impression means of each of the insertable frames.
Another object of the present invention i to provide a feeding device for each of the plurality of listing tapes 'or detail'strips in each of the insertable frames, which feeding mechanism is operated selectively, according to the impression means which has been selected to record upon 7 the selected tape.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a plurality of impression means for the plurality of listing tapes'in each of the insertable tape carrying frames, said impression means being of the squeeze impression type.
I A still further object of the present invention is to provide a modified form of impression means associated with each of the listing tapes or detail strips in the insertable frame.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a novel feeding means for each of the tapes, which feeding means is actuated by the means which operates the impression means for the tapes.
With these and other incidental objects in view the invention includes certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are set forth in appended claims, and a preferred and. modified form of embodiment of which is hereinafter described with reference to the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification.

Fig. l is a side elevation of the insertable tape carrying frame with the right side frame thereof removed, except for a small portion shown at the upper and righthand corner, and shows the relative locations of the two listing tapes or detail strips, the impression means therefor, and the feeding means for said tapes.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of the machine taken to the right of a transaction bank, showing the two lower keys in this bank and also the differential mechanism associated with this bank of keys, and the drive from the differential to set up the impression control selecting means.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the insertable tape carrying frame, showing the relative positions of the two listing tapes.
Fig. 4 illustrates the impression rolls for the two listing tapes and the selecting means for the impression rolls, and the mechanism for actuating the front roll.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Described in general terms, the present invention embodies an insertable tape carrying frame, carrying a plurality of listing tapes adapted to be used. in a machine of the type shown in the above mentioned Spurlino and Ranch Patent No. 2,361,652, for the purpose of making detail records of checks as they are run through the machines in the proof departments of banks, whereby these tape lists may be torn from the tape carrying frame and sent back to the respective banks, along with the checks that have come from those banks.
The invention involves a plurality of impression means, one for each of the listing tapes, with means for selecting one of the impression means for each operation of the machine, such means being under the control of transaction keys which control the differential mechanism, which in turn operates hammer selecting mechanism similar to that disclosed in the above mentioned Spurlino and Ranch patent.
After each of the tapes has been printed upon there is provided a feeding mechanism which is operated to feed the tape. In other words, only the tape is fed which is printed upon during any one operation of the machine.
In the operation of the present invention the impression mechanism is selected by the depression of one of two transaction keys and after the selection has been made a camming device is operated to raise the impression mechanism into a position whereby the selected impression roll may be rolled over the type to take the impression on the listing tape, which is passed beneath the type wheels and above the impression means.
The listing tape of the upper tape supply roll is fed from the supply roll around a front impression rolLdownwar-dly around an idler roll and thence between feed rolls from whence it is fed outwardly so as to be easily torn off, to be attached to the batch of checks. The tape from the rear supply roll is fed upwardly over an impression roll associated with this tape and downwardly around an idler roll and thence between feed roll-s from whence it may be torn from the roll, to. likewise be attached to certain batches of checks.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION Control keys and dz'flerential mechanism In Fig. 2 there is shown a portion of a transaction or control bank of keys and the differential mechanism associated therewith, which in turn, under control of the keys, actuates means to control the. selection of the impression means for one or the other of the two listing tapes or detail strips.
Two control keys BI and 62 are mounted in the usual key frame 63 supported by the usual rods 64' (only one of which is shown).
Pivoted around the usual tie rod 65 is a differentially adjustable arm 66. Pivoted at 61 to the arm 66 is a latch 68 having a foot which lies above a shoulder 69 of a driver 10 also pivoted around the tie rod 65. Pivoted at 'H to the differential arm 66 is a bell crank 12, the upper end of which is connected to the latch 68 by a link 73. A spring 74 connected to the bell crank 12 normally holds the foot of the latch 68 above the shoulder 69 on the driver 10.
The driver 10 is given a clockwise movement and then a counterclockwise movement each operation of the machine by the following means: Pivoted on the stationary stud is a lever 8| carrying rollers 82 and 83, cooperating with cams 84 and 85 which are secured to a main drive shaft 86 of the machine. A link 81 connects the upper end of the lever 8| and the driver 70.
As the shaft 86 rotates in a clockwise direction the lever 8| is rocked first clockwise and then counterclockwise, which through the link 81 rocks the driver 10 first clockwise and then counterclockwise to its normal position.
Upon. the clockwise movement of the driver 19 the latch'68 and differential arm 66 are carried upwardly until a nose 88 of the bell crank 12 strikes the inner end of a depressed key 6I or 62, as the case may be. When this occurs the continued movement of the driver 19 causes the bell crank 12 to be rocked counterclockwise, and the link 13 withdraws the foot of the latch 68 from the driver 19 whereupon the main surface of the foot then rides on a surface 89 of the driver 19 during the remainder of the clockwise movement of the driver 19. Thus, the differential arm 66 is stopped in a position depending 'upon whichever one of the keys 6I or 62 is dere d:
The differential arm 66 is locked in such differentially set position by means of a nose 99 of the link 13 engaging an appropriate notch SI of a "plate 92 which is secured to the key frame 63.
.Upon return movement of the driver 19 in a counterclockwise direction, a surface 93 thereof contacts a stud 94 of the differential arm 66 and restores the differential arm to its normal position. As the shoulder 69 of the driver 19 passes below the footof the latch 68, the spring 14 rocks the latch 68 clockwise so as to again put it above the shoulder 69 of the driver 19.
.As the lever 8I nears the end of its clockwise movement, a roller 95 contacts a surface 96 of a usual minimum-movement beam 91 pivoted to ,the differential arm 66. The right end of this beam has a slot 98 engaging a stud 99 of a link I99, the lower end of which is pivoted to an arm I9I pivoted on the shaft I92. As the lever 8I completes its clockwise movement, the contact .of the roller 95 with the surface 96 of the beam forces the beam 91 against a rub I92 and insures that the link I99 will be set diiferentially in accordance with the position of the differential a-rm66 under control ofthe keys 6I or 62 which ,have been depressed; 'The arm I M is secured to a segment I93 which meshes with an idler gear I94 which in turn meshes with a pinion I95, which turns on a shaft I96.
-This pinion I96 is secured to two plates I91 and I98. The plate I91 has a notch I99 and the plate I98 has a notch II9 for the purpose of controlling the selection of the impression means in a manner to be hereinafter described.
Removable tape carrying frame As has been previously pointed out the removable tape carrying frame involved in the present invention is'particularly adapted to be used in a machine of the type disclosed inthe Spur- ,lino and Rauch Patent No. 2,361,662. I
This removable frame is adapted to be inserted into a machine of the type shown in the last mentioned Spurlino and Rauch patent to have recorded on the plurality of tapes, in this removable carrying frame, data with reference to-checks from various banks, as those checks are run through the proof departments of banks,
and the amounts thereof are recorded in the accounting machine shown in the above'mentioned patent.
The removable tape carrying frame is composed of a lefthand plate I2I and a righthand plate I22 (Figs. 1 and 3) having flanges I23 and I24, respectively, and studs I25 and I26, respectively. These flanges I23 and I24 and the 'pins I25 and'I 26 are .used to guide the removable .tape carrying frame when it is inserted in the machine, such as is showninv the above mentioned Spurlino and Rauch Patent No. 2,361,662. Two side plates I2I and I22 are held together the proper distance apart by tie rods I21, I28, I29, and I39, as shown in Fig. 1.
As has been previously stated, this removable tape carrying frame carries two listing tapes or detail strips.
'The upper listing tape or detail strip I35 is fed from a supply roll I36 over a roller I31 mounted to turn freely on the tie rod I28, and then over an impression roll or platen I38 mounted to turn freely on a rod I39 supported by a pair of rockable plates I 49 and MI.
The rockable plates I49 and MI are mounted to'oscillate on a rod I42 carried by a swinging frame composed of a pair of plates I43 and I44 secured together by a rod I45 and mounted to pivot on the tie rod I28.
From the platen I38 the listing tape is passed downwardly beneath a roller I59, mounted to turn on a rod 'I5I carried by the rockable plates I49 and NH. The strip is then fed over an idler roll I52 mounted on the tie rod I29 and thence over an idler roll I 53 on the tie rod I21 and and then forwardly over a knurled feeding roller I54 mounted on a rod I55 carried by the side plates I2I and I22.
The knurled roll I54 is caused to move step by step in a counterclockwisedirection, by means to be hereinafter described, whereupon the leading end of the listing tape I35 is, due to the fact that it is held against the roller I54 by a tension roller I56, fed between a plate I59 and a tear-off bar I69, both of which are secured to the side plates I2I and I22. The means for operating the impression roll or platen I38 and also the tape feeding mechanism will be hereinafter described.
The supply roll I38 is provided with the usual core I65 by means of which said roll I36 is mounted on two short studs I66 and I61 (Fig. 3). The stud I66 is carried by a bracket I68 secured to the sidev plate I2I. The stud I61 is carried by a bracket I69 secured to the side plate I22.
This bracket I69 is made of springy metal and has a finger I19 to facilitate in mounting the supply roll on the studs I66 and I61. When it is desired to put in a new supply roll I36 the operator takes hold of the finger I19 and springs the bracket I69 toward the right (Fig. 3) a distance sufficient to insert a supply roll I36 in between the brackets I88 and I69 and cause it to be set over the studs I66 and I61 whereupon the. operator releases the finger I19 and the bracket I69 will then spring backinto the position shown in Fig. 3.
The lower listing tape or detail strip I15 is fed from a supply roll- I16 (Figs. 1 and 3) upwardly past an idler roll I11 carried by the rod I45, and thence over an impression roll or platen I18 mounted to turn freely on a rod I19 carried by the rockable plates I49 and MI. From the platen I18 the strip is fed downwardly over a roller I89 mounted to turn freely on a rod I8I -also supported by therockable plates I49 and I4}. From the roller I89 the strip is then fed over an idler roll I82 mounted on the tie rod .136. From the idler roll I82 the strip is led forpivoted on a rod I88 carried by the side plates I2I and I22 is held by a spring I89 against the top .of the listing tape I15, so that-when the knurled spear-3s roller I84 is rotated step by step in a counterclockwise direction, by means to be hereinafter described, the tape I75 will be fed to the left between a plate I99 and a tear-off bar I9I carried by the plates I2I and I22.
The lower listing tape supply roll I16 is provided with the usual core I95 which is mounted upon short studs I96 and I9! (Figs. 1 and 3). The stud I96 is carried by a bracket I98 secured to the side plate I2I' and. the stud I9! is carried by a bracket I99 secured to the side plate I22. The bracket I99 is made of springy metal and has a finger 250 to facilitate inserting the supply roll I73 between the two brackets I98 and I99 b simply taking hold of a finger 299' on the bracket I99 and moving it toward the. right as viewed in Fig. 3, whereupon the supply roll I16 may be inserted between the brackets I98 and I99 onto the studs I98 and I9'I.
The platens I38 and I18 are selected for operation by the two keys BI and 32 in the manner to be hereinafter described, whereupon they may be rolled over the type wheels to take an impression on the tapes I35 and I15, respectively from their associated type wheels, which are indicated at 29I in Figs. 1 and 4 to 8. The usual inking ribbon 202 is provided to make the records on the tapes I35 and H legible.
Impression operating means To take an impression from the type 2M by means of the impression roll or platen I38, the swinging frame consisting of the plates I43 and I44 is rocked counterclockwise about the rod I28 to raise the platen I38, after which the plates I49 and I4! are rocked clockwise as a unit, whereupon the platen I38 contacts the bottom of the type 2H, and as the plates I40 and MI continue to rock clockwise, the platen [38 is rolled over the ribbon 292 and type 20I, thus taking an impression from the type wheels onto the listing tape I35.
Immediately after the platen I38 has passed the type wheel, the swinging frame, consisting of the plates I43 and I44 is immediately lowered, whereupon the plates I49 and MI are rocked counterclockwise back to the position shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 6 the platen I38 is shown in the position in Which it is taking an impression, through the ribbon 252, from the type wheels 29! on the listing tape I35, and in Fig. 7 the parts are shown in the position immediately after the impression has been made, with the swinging frame I43---I44 having been moved clockwise into its normal lower position, after which the plates I43 and MI are rocked counterclockwise to their normal positions.
In Fi 4 there is shown a pair of cams 2I0 and 2I I secured to a printer drive shaft 2 I3 carried by the machine frames. This printer drive shaft 2I3 receives its motion from the main operating shaft 36 (Fig. 2) in a manner to be hereinafter described.
The cams 2H] and 2I I cooperate with rollers 214 and 2 I5 respectively mounted on a bell crank 2I3 secured to a shaft 2I I, also carried by the machine frames. Also secured to the shaft 2II is an arm 2I8 to which is pivoted a link 2 I 9. The left end of the link 2I9 has a notch 220 normally in the position shown in Fig. 4, but which is adapted to engage a pin 22I, by means to be hereinafter described, on an arm 222 of an impression operating slide 223 mounted to slide on a bar 224 secured to the side plate .I2I. The
8 slide 223 carries a stud 225 projecting into a slot 226 of the plate I40.
When the left end of the link 2I9 has been lowered so that the notch 220 engages the pin 22I, the cams 2I0: and 2 rock the bell crank 2I6 counterclockwise whereupon the slide 223 is moved to the left (Fig. 4.) into the position shown in Fig. 7.
As has been previously stated, just prior to the time the platen I38- reaches the type wheels 20I it is raised by the swinging frame I43I44 so that when the plate I49 has been rocked clockwise by the slide 223 as just described, the platen I38 would then be in the position shown in Fig. 6 wherein it will roll over the type 20I and take an impression from the type on the listing tape I35. As soon as this impression is made the swinging frame I.43I44 is lowered after which the cams. 21.9 and 2H rock. the bell crank. 2Ili clockwise to its normal position whereupon the link 2I9 restores the slide 223 to the right to the position shown in Fig. 4, thus rocking the plates I49 and MI back to the position shown in Fig. 4.
A guide plate 22'! (Figs. 1, '7 and 8) is secured to the plate I2I, and a guide lug 228 is secured to the bar 224 to guide the slide 223 in its forward and backward movements.
The means for rocking the swinging frame, consisting of the plates I43 and I44 will now be described. Secured to the printer drive shaft 2I3 is a disk cam 23I (Figs. 4 and 6) cooperating with a roller 232 on an arm 233, pivoted on a stud 234 on the machine frame. A spring 235 holds the roller 232 against the cam surface 23I. The left end of the arm 233 is provided with a slot 236 to surround a rod 231 carried by the plates I43 and I44 of the swinging frame. The cam 23I', swinging frame I43I44 and arm 233 are in their normal positions, shown in Fig. 4.
As the shaft 2 I3 rotates clockwise the cam 23I gradually rocks the arm 233 clockwise until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 6 whereupon the roller 232 is adjacent the high part of the cam 23f.
In this position, as has been previously stated, the platen I38 is rolled over the type wheels ZUI to take the impression on the tape I35 and immediately thereafter, and upon continued movement of the cam 23 I in a clockwise direction the roller 232 drops off the high portion of the cam under the tension of the spring 235 to immediately rock the swinging frame I43I44 in a clockwise direction from the position shown in Fig. 6 to that shown in Fig. 4.
The means for driving the shaft 2I3 consists of the following mechanism shown in Fig. 2. In axial alinement with the main cam shaft 86 is a shaft 24I, which has secured thereto a gear 242, meshing with an idler gear 243 mounted on a stud 244 on the machine frame. The gear 243 meshes with a gear 245 secured to the printer cam shaft 2 I3.
By means of a clutch device not shown herein, but which is fully illustrated and described in the United States- Letters Patent No. 2,467,704, issued to Pascal Spurlino, Rudolph Moser, Alfred Kibler, Marvin Frost, and Walter Kreider, the clockwise movement of the main drive shaft 86 is communicated to the gear 242 and shaft 24I, whereupon through the idler gear 243 and gear 245 the shaft M3 is driven one clockwise rotation simultaneously with the clockwise rotation of the main operating shaft 86 during all adding operations and also during the second cycle of total and sub-total operations.
I During the first cycle of each total and subtotal operation the clutch device disconnects the shaft '24I from the shaft 86 so that the printer mechanism will, not be operated during such first cycles of the total and sub-total operations, as has been fully illustrated and described in the last mentioned Spurlino et al. Patent No. 2,467,704.
To cause the platen I18 to take an. impression on the listing tape I15, the slide-223 is moved from its normal position, shown'in Fig. p4,,to the right, to the position shown in Fig. 8, bymeans which will now be described.
Referring particularly to Figs. and 8, there is secured to the printer cam shaft 2I3 another pair of cams 250 and I, which cooperate with rollers 252 and 253 of a bell crank 254 secured tothe shaft 2I1. Also secured to this shaft 2I1 is an arm 255 to which is pivoted a link 255, the leftv end of which has a notch 251 adapted to be moved downwardly into engagement with the previously described pin 22I on the arm 222 of the platen operating slide 223.
Y In Fig. 8 the link 256 has been moved downwardly by means to be hereinafter described, and when in such position and upon clockwise movement of the shaft 2I3, the cams 259 and 25I rock the bell crank 254 clockwise, whereupon the slide 223 is moved from the position shown in Fig. 5 toward the right to the position shown in Fig. 8, and its stud 225, through its engagement with the plate I rocks the plate I40 and the plate I4I counterclockwise, thus moving the platen I18 from the position shown in Fig. 5 to that shown in Fig. 8.
The above described cam 23I moves the platen I18 upwardly against the type wheel 291 as has been described in connection with the platen I38, sothat as the plates I49 and MI complete their counterclockwise movement, the platen I18 will roll over the type wheels and take an impression therefrom upon the listing tape I15. After the impression is taken the swinging frame I43 I44 is lowered again by the spring 235 when the roller 232 drops off the high part of the cam 23I in the same manner as in connection with the platen I38, after which the cams 250 and 25I rock the bell crank 254 counterclockwise, thus moving the impression operating slide 223 to the left from the position shown in Fig. 8 into its normal position, shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
Impression Platen Selecting ecms Whether the platen I18 'or the platen I38 is' to be operated is dependent upon the coupling of the link 256 with the pin 22I or the link 2I9 with the pin 22I which in turn is controlled by 'the keys BI and 62. Whenever the key BI is depressed, the previously described disk I91 is moved from the position shown in Fig. 5 to the position shown in Fig. 8, whereupon a feeling finger 26I is shown engaged with'the notch I09 of the disk I91. This feeling finger 26I is pivoted to an arm 262, pivoted on a shaft 263 carried by the printer frame. This arm 262 is drawn by a spring 264 so that it normally contacts a pin 2650f an arm 266 which is secured to the shaft 263. Pivoted to the arm 262 is a link 261 which is also pivoted to the link 256. In Fig. '5 the feeling finger 26I, the arm 266, arm 262, and link 261 are shown in their normal positions. During the operation of the machine, the shaft 263 is rocked in a counterclockwise direction by means of a pair of cams 219 and 2H, cooperating with rollers 212 and 213 of a bell II) crank 214, pivoted on the shaft 2I1. The bell crank 214 is connected by a link 215 to an arm 216, which is secured to the shaft 263. The cams 210 and 21I cause the shaft 263 to be rocked counterclockwise and then clockwise to normal position.
When the shaft 263 is rocked counterclockwise the arm 266 is rocked likewise, and if the disk I01 has been moved into a position where the notch I99 is opposite the feeling finger 26I, by the operation of the differential mechanism shown in Fig. 2 under control of the key 61, then the finger 26I will enter the notch I09 and consequently the arm 262 can be rocked counterclockwise by itsspring 264 a distance sufiicient to cause the link 261 to lower the link 256 and cause the notch 251 to engage the pin 22I on the arm 222 of the impression actuating slide 223 so that the slide will be operated by the cams 259 and 25I in the manner previously described, to cause an impression to be made from the type 2IlI by the platen I18 to print on the listing tape I15.
The disk I08 is adapted to be set under the control of the key 62 and when this key is depressed and the differential mechanism of Fig. 2 moves the disk I98 so that the notch I II) is opposite a feeler finger 28I (Figs. 4 and 7) on an arm 282 pivoted on the shaft 263. The arm 282 is normally held by a spring 284 against a stud 285 of an arm 286 secured to the shaft 263. The arm 282 is connected by a link 281 to the previously described link 2I9.
When the shaft 263 is rocked counter-clockwise in the manner previously described, and the notch III) is opposite the feeler finger 26I, the spring 284 rocks the arm 282 counterclockwise a distance suffioient to cause the notch 229 of the link 2I9 to engage the pin 2'2I so that when the cams 2I0 and 2H operate to move the link 2I9 first to the left and then to the right in the manner previously described, the slide 223 will be moved likewise to cause the impression roller I38 to take the impression from the type wheels 26I on the listing tape I35.
Strip Feeding Mechanism As earlier mentioned, there is associated with the listing tape I35 a feeding mechanism to advance the tape after each impression thereon from the type wheels 2III by the impression roll I38. Likewise there is a separate feeding mechanism associated with the listing tape I15, to advance this tape one step after each impression thereon from the type wheels 20I by the platen roll I18.
The feeding mechanisms for both tapes I35 and I15 is operated partially by the platen operating slide 223. The feeding mechanism for the upper listing tape or detail strip I35 will'be described first. Secured to the side of the feed roller I54 is a ratchet 29I (Figs. 1 and 7). Pivoted on the rod I55 adjacent the ratchet 29I is an arm 292, carrying a pawl 293, held by a torsion spring 294 in engagement with the ratchet 29I. A spring 295 holds the arm 292 normally in the position shown in Fig. 1, wherein it contacts the plate 221, which acts as a stop for the arm 292.
When the impression operating slide 223 is moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 7 a roller 296 carried by the slide 223 engages the arm 292 and rocks the arm clockwise from the position shown in Fig. 1 into the position shown in Fig. '1, which is sufficient to move the feeding pawl 293 backwardly slightly over one tooth space so that it engages the next lower adjacent tooth of the ratchet 291. A sationary pin 291 carried by the side plate I2I acts as a limiting stop for the clockwise movement of the arm 292.
This clockwise movement of the arm 292 puts the spring 295 under tension, and when the slide 223 is restored to the right to its normal position and the roller 296 is released or moved away from the arm 292, the spring 295 rocks the arm 292 counterclockwise, whereupon the feeding pawl 2-93 turns the ratchet 29I one tooth space, which in turn rotates the feeding roller I54 one step to advance or feed the listing tape I35 so that the leading end of the tape is fed further past the cut-off bar I60.
During the time the arm 292 is rocked clockwise and the pawl 293 pulled downwardly over the ratchet teeth and to prevent'any retrograde movement of the ratchet 2-9I, and consequently of the feed roll I54, a retaining pawl 298 is held in engagement with the ratchet 29I by a torsion spring 299. This retaining pawl 298 is pivoted on a block 366 (Fig. '1) which is secured to the left side I2I of the removable tape carrying frame.
The means for feeding the lower listing tape I will now be described. Secured to the side of the feeding roller I84 (Figs. 1, '1 and 8) is a ratchet 3| I. the ratchet 3I'I is an arm 3I2, carrying a feed pawl 3I3, held in engagement with'the ratchet 3 by a torsion spring 3I4. A spring 3I5 holds the arm 3I2 normally against a stop pin 3I6 carried by the side plate I2 I.
When the impression operating slide 223 is moved from its normal position in Fig. 1 into its righthand position, as shown in Fig. 8, to cause an impression to be made by the impression roller I18 from the type I, a block 3I1 secured to the slide 223 contacts the upper part of the pawlcarrying arm 3I2 and rocks said arm from the position shown in Figs. 1 and '1 into the position shown in Fig. 8, until said arm comes against a stationary stop pin 3I8 carried by the side plate I2I. This movement of the arm M2 is sufficient to raise the pawl 3I3 up slightly over one tooth space on the ratchet 31 I so that when the slide 223 is returned to the left from the position shown in Fig. 8 into that shown in Fig. 1, and the block 3l1 leaves the arm 3I2, the spring 3I5 rocks said arm 3I2 in a counterclockwise direction whereupon the pawl' 3I3 turns the ratchet 3 II and consequently the feeding roller I84 one step to advance the lower listing tape or detail strip 115 beyond the cut-off or tear-off bar I9I.
During the time the arm 3I2 is being rocked in a clockwise direction a retaining pawl 3 I9 held by a torsion spring 320, in engagement with the ratchet 3i 1, prevents any retrograde or clockwise movement of the ratchet 3I I, and consequently of the feed roller I84. The retaining pawl 3I9 is mounted on a block 32 I, carried by the left side plate I2I.
MODIFIED FORM Modified removable tape carrying frame In Figs. 9 to 13 inclusive there is illustrated a modified form of removably tape-carrying frame, with modified forms of mechanisms for feeding the tapes, taking impressions on the tapes from the type wheels, and for mounting the tapes.
This removable tape carrying frame is composed of a lefthand plate 346 and a righthand plate 34, (Figs. 9 and 12) having flanges 342 and Mounted on the rod I85, adjacent 343, respectively, and studs 344 (only one of'vvhich is shown). The flanges and the studs are used to guide the removable tape-carrying frame when it is inserted in the machine, such as is shown in the above mentioned Spurlino and Ranch Patent No. 2,361,662. The plates 34!] and 34I are held together, the proper distance apart, by tie rods 345, 346, 341, 348, 349, 356, 35I and 352', all of which are shown in Fig. 9.
This modified removable tape-carrying frame carries two listing tapes or detail strips. The upper listing tape or detail strip 355 is fedfrom a supply roll 356 over an idler roller 351 carried by a rod 358 which acts as a tie rod for a pair of arms 359 and 366 pivoted on the tie rod 348. From the roller 351 the strip 355 is fed over a roller 36I carried by a rod 362 and thence over a roller 363 carried by a rod 364 and then upwardly over a printing platen 365, then over a roller 366 carried by the tie rod 345 and then forwardly between a flexible feed roller 361 and the supply roll 356, which is held by means to be hereinafter described, constantly against the leading end of the tape 355 as it is passed between the roller 361 and the supply roller 356. The roller 361 is mounted to turn on a rod 368 carried by the frames 340 and MI.
The above described rods 362 and 364 act as tie rods for and are carried by a pair of oscillating plates 316 (Fig. 9) and 31I (Fig. 10), which are mounted to oscillate as a unit on the tie rod 345 by means to be hereinafter described. The platen 365 is carried in a channel bar 312, supported by the plates 310 and 31 I.
The feed roller 361 is caused to move step by step in a clockwise direction, by means to be hereinafter described, whereby the leading end of the tape 355 is, due to the fact that it is held between the roller 361 and the supply roll 356 by torsion springs 314 only one of which is shown. One spring 314 is wrapped around the rod 343 and has one end attached to the bottom of the arm 359 and the other end attached to the frame plate 34I. The other spring 314, which is not shown is wrapped around the rod 348 and has one end attached to the bottom of the arm 369 and. the other end attached to the frame plate 346. The leading end of the tape 355 is fed between a plate 315 and a tear-off bar 316 supported by the plates 349 and 34I.
By means to be hereinafter described, the oscillating plates 316 and 31 I, which form a platen operating frame for the platen 365 will be moved counter-clockwise to force the platen 365 and tape 355 against a ribbon 202 to take an impression from the type wheels 26 I.
The supply roll 356 is mounted on a rod 311, which in turn is mounted to turn in half-round bearings 318 of the previously described arms 359 and 369.
As above stated, the springs 314 (only one of which is shown), by their constant pressure cause the arms 359 and 360 to be forced in a clockwise direction, and consequently hold the outer diameter of the supply roll 356 in constant engagement with the leading end of the tape 355-so as to press it against the feed roll 361, whereby, upon turning the feed roll 361 in a clockwise direction, the leading end of the tape 355 is fed outwardly between the plate 315 and the tear-off bar 316.
The fact that the supply roll 356 is constantly diminishing in size makes no difference to the feeding because the arms 359 and 360 are always moved or pressed in a clockwise direction and.
therefore its outer periphery will always contact the leading end of the strip and hold it in firm engagement against the feed roller 361.
The lower listing tape 385 is fed from a supply roll 386 up over an idler roll 38'! mounted on a rod 388 supported by the frame plates 340 and 34!. From the roll 38'! the tape is fed over a roller 389 mounted on a rod 390 and from there over a roll 39! mounted on a rod 392, and thence upwardly over a printing platen 395, over a roller 396 mounted on the rod 346 and thence over a roller 39'! on the rod 341. From the roller 39'! the tape is fed downwardly between the supply roll 386 and a roller 398 on the rod 352, and then between the supply roll 386 and the stud 35!. From here the tape 385 is fed upwardly overa roller 400 carried by astud 40!, which connects a pair of arms 402 and 403, which arms are pivoted on the tie rod 349, previously described. The leading end of the tape 385 is then passed between knurled feed rollers 404 and 405. The roller 404 is mounted on a rod 406 carried by the plates 340 and 34!, and theroller 405, which is a tension roller, is carried by an arm 40! pivoted on a stud 408 carried by the side plate 34!. This tension roller 405 is held by a spring 409 in contact with the tape or detail strip 385'pressing it against the feed roller 404. After passing between the rolls 404 and 405 the end of the tape 385 is passed downwardly over a plate M and under a tear-off bar 4! both of which are secured to the side plates 340 and 34!.
. The above. described rods 390 and 392, which support the idle rolls 389 and 39!, are carried by a pair of oscillating plates 420 (Fig. 9) and 42! (Fig. 10) which, by the means of these two studs 390 and 392 are formed into a frame to support th printing platen 395, which in turn is carried by a channel bar 422, also supported by the plates 420 and 42 I. v
The lower listing tape supply roll 386 rests upon the roller 398 and the tie rod and is held in such a position by the arms 402 and 403, which have half-round bearings 423, which engage a shaft 424 projecting from each end of the supply roll 386. Torsion springs 425 (only one of which is shown) are wrapped around the rod 349 adjacent the arms 402 and 403. Each spring 425 has one end against its respective arm 402 or 403, and the other end of the spring being held firmly against the plate 34! and 340, respectively, to always apply a clockwise movement to the arms 402 and 403, thereby holding the supply roller 386 firmly against the roller 398 and rod 35!, even as the supply roll 386 diminishes in size.
The platens 3'65 and 395 are selected for operation by the two keys 6! and 62 in a manner to be hereinafter described, whereby said platens are moved to press their respective tapes 355 and 385 against the ribbon 202 to take a legible impression from the type wheels 20!.
Impression operating means 14 of which is provided with a notch 43'! adapted to: be moved into engagement with a pin 438 on a platen frame operating slide 439.
The slide 439 has a slot 440 into which projects 4 a stud 44!, carried by the side plate 340. A collar 442 holds the lower end of the slide 439 in its proper lateral position.
The slide 439 is adapted to be moved horizontally back and forth and to prevent any rocking of the slide its upper edge 443 lies just below the two previously described tie rods 345 and 346. This slide 439 lies next to the side plate 340 on the inside thereof, and just back of the two oscillating plates 3'!! and 42!.
The plate 439 is provided with an operating pin 444, projecting past the edge of the oscillating plate 31! (Fig. 10). When the left end of the link 436 has been moved downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 11 into the position shown in Fig. 13, the notch 43! is in engagement with the pin 438. The means for moving this link 436 downwardly will be hereinafter described.
With the notch 43! engaging the pin 438, upon clockwise movement of the shaft 2!3, the cams 430 and 43! rock the bell crank 432, shaft 2!!, and arm 435 clockwise, whereupon the link is moved to the right, thus moving the slide 439 to the right from the position shown in Fig. 11 into the position shown in Fig. 13. Upon such movement of the slide 439, the pin 444, by its engagement with the oscillating plate 31! rocks the plate 37! and its associated plate 310 counterclockwise to move the platen 365 from the position shown in Figs. 10 and 11 into the position shown in Fig. 13, to cause a legible printed impression to be made on the upper tape or detail strip 355, from the type wheels 20!. Immediately after the impression has been made the cams 430 and 43! restore the bell crank 434 and arms 435 to their normal positions, thus moving the slide 439 from the position shown in Fig. 13 to the left, back into position shown in Figs. 10 and 11, whereupon, as the stud 444 is moved to the left the platen frame consisting of the oscillating plates 310 and 3'!! is rocked clockwise by gravity back into the position shown in Figs. 9, l0 and 11.
' To print upon the lower tape or detail strip 385 the plates 420 and 42! are rocked clockwise from the position shown in Figs. 9, l0 and 11, into the position shown in Fig. 12 by the following mechanism:
Secured to the cam shaft 2 I3 is a pair of cams 445 and 446 (Figs. 10 and 12), which cooperate with rollers 44! and 448 of a bell crank 449 secured to the shaft 2 7. Also secured to the shaft 2!! is an arm 450 having pivoted thereto a link 45!, the left end of which has a notch 452 adapted, by means to be hereinafter described, to be moved into engagement with the pin 438 on the hammer operating slide 439. The slide 439 also has an operating stud 453 which projects past and is adapted to cooperate with the righthand edge of the platen supporting plate 42! (Fig. 10).
5 When the notch 452 of the link 45! has been engaged with a pin 438 and the shaft 2 !3 rotates in a clockwise direction, the cams 445 and 446 rock the bell crank 449, shaft 2! 1, and arm 450 in a counterclockwise direction whereupon the link 45! moves the slide 439 to the left from the position shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11, into the position shown in Fig. 12, whereupon the operating pin 453 rocks the platen frame consisting of the plates 42 9 and 42! clockwise, to move the platen 395 against the type Wheels 264 to take an impression on the lower detail strip 385 through the ribbon 292. After the impression has been made, the slidev 436 upon continued movement of the cams. 445 and 44.6, is moved back into the position shown in Fig. 10, whereupon the plates 4211 and 421 rock clockwise, asv the pin 453 is moved to the right, so. that the platen 395 is restored by gravity to its normal position.
Platen selecting means Whether the platen 365 or the platen 395 is to be operated is dependent upon the coupling of the links 436. and 45! with the pin 438, which. in turn is controlled by the keys 6! and 62 (Fig. 2).
Whenever the key 6! is depressed, a disk 46!) (Fig. 11) is moved from the position shown in this figure into the position shown in Fig. 13 by the previously described difierential mechanism and train of gears shown in Fig. 2. When the disk 466 is in the position shown in Fig. 13, a feeling finger 46! is moved into engagement with a, notch 462 of the disk 460. This feeling finger 46! is pivoted to an arm 463, which in turn is pivoted on the shaft 263, and is held by a spring 464 in contact with a stud 465 on an arm 466 which is secured to the shaft 263. Pivoted to the arm 463 is a link 461, which is also pivoted to the link 436.
In Fig. 11, the feeling finger 46!, the arm 463, arm 466, and link 46'! are shown in their normal positions. During the operation of the machine the shaft 263 is rocked in a counterclockwise direction and then clockwise, back to normal position by means of the cams 216 and 21! (Fig. 5) previously described.
When the shaft 263 is rocked counterclockwise the arm 466 is rocked likewise, and if the disk 466 has been moved into a position where the notch 462 is opposite the feeling finger 46!, as shown in Fig. 13, by the operation of the differential mechanism shown in Fig. 2 under control of the key 6!, then the finger 46.! will enter the notch 462 and consequently the arm 463 can be rocked counterclockwise, by its Spring 464, tov follow the stud 465 to cause the link 461 to lower the link 436 and cause the notch 431 to engage the pin 438 on the slide 439 so that the slide will be operated, in the manner previously described, by the earns 4.39 and 43!, to cause an impression to be made from the type wheels 26! by the platen 365, to print on the listing tape or detail strip 355.
To select the platen 395 for printing, the key 62 (Fig. 2) is depressed, whereupon, under the control of the differential mechanism and train of gears shown in Fig. 2', a disk 419 (Figs. 10 and 12) is. moved from the position shown in Fig. 10 into the position shown in Fig. 12, whereupon a feeling finger 4.1! is moved into a notch 412 of the disk 41!). The feeling finger 41! is pivoted on an arm 413, in turn pivoted on the shaft 263, and held in.- engagement. by a. spring 414, with a stud 415 on the arm 416, which is secured to the shaft 263.
During the operation of the machine, the shaft 263 is moved first counterclockwise and then clockwise by the cams 219- and 21! (Fig. 5) in the manner previously described, whereupon the feeling finger 41! is moved from the position shown in Fig. 10 into the position shown in Fig. 12, due to the fact that the spring 414 causes the arm 413 to follow the stud 415, which is moved counterclockwise with the shaft 263. Pivoted to the arm 413 is a link 411, which is alsopivoted to the link 45!. When the arm 413 is moved counterclockwise in. the manner above described, when the finger 41! engages the notch 412 of the cam 41!), the link 411 lowers the left end of the link 45! and causes the notch 452 to engage the stud 438 of the hammer operating slide 439 and consequently upon movement of this slide by the cams 445 and 446, the platen 395 is moved into printing position to cause this platen 395 to take an impression from the type wheels 29! onto the lower listing tape or detail strip 385.
Strip Orr tape feeding mechanism There is associated with the listing tape 355 a feeding mechanism to advance the tape step by step for each printingoperation, the timing of the feeding being such that the tape is advanced just prior to the printing thereon by the platen 365.
There is also a feeding mechanism associated with and adapted to operate the lower listing tape 395, which feeding mechanism is operated so as to feed this tape step by step each operation of the machine just before the printing thereon is made by the platen 395.
The feeding mechanism for the upper tape 355 will be described first. Secured to the feed roll 361 (Fig. 9) is a ratchet 48! (Fig. 12), which is engaged by a spring-pressed feed pawl 482, car ried by an arm 483, pivoted on the rod 368. A pin 434 carried by the arm 483 is normally held in engagement with a surface 485 of the platen operating slide 439 by a spring 466 attached to an arm 43? which is integral with the arm 483. In Figs. 9 and 12 the arm 48-3 and pin 484 are shown in their normal positions.
When the slide 439 is moved to the right in the manner previously described, to take an impression from the type Wheels by the platen 365, the pin 484 is caused to ride down a cam surface 488 on the slide 439 by the action of the spring, 486. At the same time the pawl 432, being carried by thev arm 483, turns the ratchet 43! one step in a clockwise direction to feed the strip or tape 355 just prior to the time the platen 36E. strikes the type 20!.
At the end of the movement ofv the slide 439 to the right, the pin 494. is. at the bottom of the cam surface 483 and the pawl 43?. is in the position shown in Fig. 13, whereupon the feeding of the strip 355. has been completed.
Now, as the platen operating slide 439 is moved to; the. left from the position shown in Fig. 1.3 into its normal position shown in Figs. 9 and 12, the cam surface 488 in cooperation with the pin 484 rocks the arm. 463' counterclockwise whereupon the pawl 462 is moved upwardly a distance slightly greater than one tooth space on the ratchet 48! to. get. it into position for the next feeding operation.
In order to prevent any rectograde movement of the ratchet 48i and consequently the feed roll 36! while the arm 483 is being restored and the pawl 462 lifted, there is provided a springpressedretaining pawl 49!] which is carried by the side plate 349.
The means for feeding the lower listing tape 385 just prior to the printing thereon by the platen 395 will now be described. Secured to the feed roller 494 is a ratchet 49! (Figs. 12 and 13). Engaging this'ratchet is a spring-pressed feeding pawl 492, carried by an arm 493-, pivoted on the rod 406'. This arm 493 and consequently the pawl 49-2 are held in their normal positions- 17 by a spring 494, which holds the arm 493 against a stationary pin 995 carried by the side plate 340.
When the platen operating slide 439 is moved from its normal position, shown in Fig. 9, into its lefthand position, shown in Fig. 12, to cause an impression to be made from the type wheels 29! by the platen 395, a surface 496 of the slide 439 contacts the upper righthand edge of the arm 493 and rocks said arm counterclockwise from the position shown in Fig. 13 into the position shown in Fig. 12, whereupon the pawl 992 turns the ratchet 49I and feed roller 494 counterclockwise one step of movement to feed the lower listing tape or detail strip 385 to the left. This movement of the arm 493 takes place just prior to the time the platen 395 strikes the type 29!.
After the printing has taken place the slide 339 is moved toward the right as previously described, whereupon the spring 394 rocks the arm 493 clockwise back to the position shown in Fig.7l3, in contact with the stop pin 495 and at the same time raises the pawl 492 slightly more than one tooth so as to be ready for the next feeding motion.
In order to prevent any clockwise movement of the ratchet 49! and feed roller 4 99 during this restoring movement of the arm 493, a retaining pawl 49! carried by a stationary block 498 secured to the plate 349 is held in engagement with the ratchet 49!.
While the forms of mechanism herein shown and described are admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the exact forms of embodiment herein disclosed.
What is claimed is:
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an insertable record strip carrier having parallel side walls and connecting means therefor; a plurality of record strips carried by said carrier; a plurality of record strip feeding means carried by said carrier; a plurality of impression means carried by said carrier between said walls; actuating means mounted in said carrier and common to the plurality of impression means to actuate said impression means; a plurality of operating means mounted in the machine and outside said carrier to operate said common actuating means; a plurality of selectively operable coupling means mounted in the machine and outside of said carrier; selectively operable means to operate said plurality of coupling means to selectively couple said operating means with said common actuating means when said carrier is inserted in the machine, to cause said common actuating means to actuate one of said impression means to print on one of said record strips, and to cause operation of the record strip feeding means associated with said one record strip; and manipulative means to determine which of said selectively operable means shall be operated.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an insertable record strip carrier including side walls connected by tie members; a plurality of record strips carried by said carrier; a plurality of impression means carried by said carrier within said Walls; actuating means mounted within the carrier and common to all of said impression means to actuate said impression means; a. plurality of operating means strips;
mounted in the machine and outside the carrier walls to operate said common actuating means; a plurality of selectively operable coupling means mounted in the machine and outside said carrier walls; selective means to operate the coupling means to selectively couple said operating means with said common actuating means when said carrier is inserted in the machine, to cause said common actuating means to actuate one of said impression means to print on one of said record and manipulative means to determine which of said selective means shall be operated.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an insertable record strip carrier comprised of side walls and tie members therefor; a plurality of record strips carried by said carrier; a plurality of record strip feeding means carried by said carrier; a plurality of impression means carried by said carrier Within said side walls; actuating means common to all of said impression means, said actuating means being carried within the walls of said carrier; a plurality of means carried by said common actuating means to cause operation of said record strip feeding means; a plurality of operating means mounted in the machine and outside of said carrier walls to operate said common actuating means, said operating means being normally disconnected from said actuating means; selectively operable coupling devices mounted in the machine and outside of said carrier; selectively controlled means to operate the coupling devices to selectively connect said operating means with said common actuating means when said carrier is inserted in the machine to cause said actuating means to selectively actuate said impression means to selectively print on said record strips; and manipulative devices to control the selective of said selectively controlled means.
4. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an insertable record strip carrier; a plurality of record strips carried by said carrier; a plurality of record strip feeding means carried by said carrier, a plurality of impression means carried by said carrier; a member carried by said carrier and common to all of said impression means and adapted to selectively actuate said impression means; a plurality of devices carried by said member to cause selective operation of said record strip feeding means upon operation of said member; a plurality of operating means mounted in the machine to operate said member, said operating means being normally disconnected from said member; a coupling device mounted in the machine; means to operate said coupling device to connect one of said operating means with said member to move said member in one direction to actuate one of said impression means to print on one of said record strips and cause operation of one of said record strip feeding means; another coupling device mounted in the machine; means to operate the latter coupling device to connect another of said operating means to said member to move said member in another direction to actuate another of said impression means to print on another of said record strips and cause operation of another of said record strip feeding means; and means to select which of said coupling operating means shall be operated.
5. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an insertable record strip carrier; a plurality of record strips carried by said carrier; a plurality of record strip feeding means carried by said carrier; a plurality of impres- 19 sion means; rockable means carrying said impression means, said rockable means being :carried by said insertable .record strip carrier; a member carried by said record strip carrier and adapted, when said carrier is inserted in the "machine, to be moved in one direction to operate said rockable means to move one of said impression means into impression-taking position to print on one of said record strips, and cause operation of one of said record strip feeding means, said member adapted to be moved in another direction to operate said rockable 'means'to move another of said impression means into impression-taking position to print on another of said record strips and cause operation of another of said record strip feeding means; a link and cam device to move said member in said onedirecti'on; and a secondlink and cam device to move said member in said another direction.
6. In a machine or" the class described, the combination of an insertable record strip "carrier; a plurality of record strips carried -by said carrier; a plurality of impression means; rockable means carrying said impression means, said ro'ckable means being carried by said insertable record strip carrier; a member carried by said record strip carrier and adapted, when said carrier is inserted in the machine, 'to be moved in one direction'to operate said rockable means to move one of said impression means into impression-takingposition to print on one of said trecord strips, said memberadaptedxto be moved in another direction to operate said rockable meansto .movean'other of saidimpress'ion means into "impression-taking position to print on :another of said record strips; and a plurality "of selectable members mounted in the machine to actuate said 'rockable means.
77. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an insertable record strip carrier; 'a plurality of :record strips carried by said carrier; "a plurality of record strip feeding means carried by said carrier; a plurality of impressiontmeans; rockable means carrying said impression means, saidrockable means being carried 'by said .insertable record strip carrier; a member carried by said record strip carrier and adapted when said carrier is inserted in the machine, to :be moved in one direction to operate :said .rockable means to move one of saidimpressionmeans into impression-taking position and cause operation of one of said record strip feedingmeans,"sai'dmember adaptedto be moved in another direction to operate said rookable means ito imove'another of said impression means into impression-taking position and cause operation of :another of said record strip feeding means; and selectively operable means mounted in the :machine to determine the direction of movement of said member.
SM-In :a machine of the class described, the combination of an insertable record strip carrier; a plurality of record strips carried by said carrier; a plurality of record strip feeding means "carried by'saidcarrier; a plurality of impression means; 'rockable means carrying said impression means, said rockable means being carried by said insertable record strip carrier; a member carried by said record strip carrier and adapted, when said carrier is inserted in the machine, to be moved in one direction to operate said 'rockable means to move one of said impression means into impression-taking position, said member adapted to be moved in another direction to operate said rockable vmeans 'to move another of said impression .means into :impression-taking position; means carried by said mem ber to cause operation of one of said record strip feeding means when said member is moved in one direction; and means carried by said member to cause operation of another one of said record strip feeding .means when said member is moved in said another direction.
9. In a machine of 'the class described, the combination of an insertable record strip carrier; a plurality of record strips carried by said carrier; a plurality of impression means; rockable means carrying said impression .means; 'a rockable frame carrying said .rockable means, said frame being carried by said insertable record strip carrier; a member carried bysaid rec- 0rd strip carrier and adapted-when said carrier is inserted in the machine, to be moved in one direction to-operate said rockable means to move one of said impression means into impressiontaking position to print on one of said record strips, said member valso adapted to be moved in another direction to operate said rockable means to move another of said impression means into impression-taking position to print 'on another of said record strips; and means mounted in the machine to rock said rockable frame when said rockable means is being rocked by any of the movements of said member; and means mounted inthe machine to operate said'm'ember.
10. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an .insertable record istrip carrier; a record strip carried by said carrier; record strip feeding means for said strip, said feeding means being carried by said carrier; an impression means for said record strip; a second record strip carried by said carrier; a record strip feeding means for said second record strip, said feeding means being carried by said carrier; an impression means for said second strip; a rookable member common to both of said impression means and supporting the same, said rockable means being carried .by said carrier; a slidable member carried by said carrier; means mounted in the machine to move the slidable 'member in one direction to rock said rockable 'means in one direction, to'move said first mentioned impression means into printing position to effect printing on the first mentioned record strip, when said carried is inserted in the ma chine; a device on said slidable member to cause operation of said first mentioned feeding means when said member is moved in said one direction; means mounted in the machine to move the slidable member in another direction, to move said second mentioned impression means into printing position to effect printing on said second mentioned record strip; and a device on 'said slidable member to cause operation of said second mentioned feeding means when said member is moved in said another direction.
11. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an insertable record strip carrier; a plurality of record strips carried by said carrier; a plurality of rockable impression means carried by said carrier; a slidable device adapted, when said carrier is inserted into the machine, to be moved in two directions, said member being carriedby said carrier; a member carried by said device to engage and rock one of said impression means when said device is moved in one direction to print on one of said record strips; and a second member carried by said device to engage and rock another of said impression 21 means when said device is moved in another direction to print on another of said record strips; and selectively operable devices mounted in the machine to actuate said slidable device in both directions.
12. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an insertable record strip carrier; a plurality of record strips carried by said carrier; a plurality of record strip feeding means carried by said carrier, a plurality of rockable impression means carried by said carrier; a slidable device adapted, when said carrier is inserted into the machine, to be moved in two directions, said member being carried by said carrier; a member carried by said device to engage and rock one of said impression means when said device is moved in one direction; a second member carried by said device to engage and rock said another of said impression means when said device is moved in another direction, means on 22 said device to cause operation of said one-strip feeding means when said device is moved in said one direction; and means on said device to operate another of said strip feeding means when said device is moved in said another direction.
