Rotating-tool machines.-In a machine for dressing hides or skins, of the type in which the work is carried by an endless band into contact with two oppositely-rotating cylindrical knives, one on each side of a pair of grip-rolls, the knives are mounted in fixed bearings, and the bed-supporting rolls in bearings which are adjustable with regard to the knives to regulate the pressure upon the work. The band e, Figs. 1 and 2, passes over bed-rolls d, c, the lower griproll k, and an end roll g which has means, such as h<1>, for moving it to tighten the belt. The spring-supported bearings f of the roll c are carried in slides i, which may be raised or lowered with regard to the knife a by a lever j<3> which is controlled by a treadle. The roller d may be moved with regard to the knife b in a similar manner by an extension m of the slide i<1> bearing on a wedge m<1> which is controlled by an arm n and a hand-lever mounted on the same side of the machine as the treadle. The wedge also supports an extension m<3> of the slide that carries the bearing k<1> of the grip-roll k, so that the rolls k, d are controlled together. The skin is prevented from wrapping around the upper grip-roll o by a blade o<1> attached to a spring- controlled pivoted member o<2>, and a spring- pressed revolving brush p is employed to remove the skin from the band after treatment. The knives a. b are driven independently by belts, and the band is driven by the roll g from a high-speed main shaft q through a toothedgear train, the wheels of which may be changed. When the knives are used for fleshing, the blades may be serrated or saw-toothed.
