To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Joi-rN GLA- snL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in l lideorking Machines, of which the following fication.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for scraping, dehairing, defieshing, slating and deliming hides preparatory to tanning as well as otherwise working hides for leather, and has as one of its objects the provision of means preventing injury to operators, and which also facilitate the speed of operation.
Another main object is to provide a mech anism that will cut the flesh away in slices, simulating hand fieshing, instead of destroying the texture as old style fieshing machines do by grinding down the flesh, rendering the by-product of greatly re duced value in glue making for which it is used.
Another object is to provide means whereby the hides are held against the cylinder upon which they are operated, the means being instantaneously applied or removed.
A further object is to provide a plurality of belt carried, spring controlled knives, the same having a rolling guide and self sharpener, and acting either by themselves or in combination with a helically bladed cutting cylinder.
These and other important objects, which will become more fully apparent as the description progresses, are attained by the novel design, construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure and in which 2-- Figure 1 is an end elevation, parts being in section, showing one embodiment of the invention. 7

In carrying out the invention, a substantial base plate 15 is secured to its foundation, the plate having upon it a pair of parallel spaced rails 16 extending fro-m a point near the center to its front edge, along which is disposed a rigid guard plate 17, slanting rearwardly and'having a reinforcingrail lS at its top edge.
Mounted on the flanged wheels 20 is a carriage 21 from the platform of which rise a pair of standards 23 and 24, connected by a web25, both having bearings to re ceive the pintles 27 of the revoluble hide carrying or work cylinder 30, at the end of which is secured a bevel gear 32 partially covered by the guard plate 29, secured to the standard 24.
The gear '32 is driven by. the pinion 33 at the upper end of a short vertical shaft carried in the bearing 34, formed with the standard 2 1-, the shaft having rotary mo tion communicated to it by the miter gears 36 and 37, the latter being fast upon the short horizontal shaft 38, mounted in a bearing 40, formed with the standard 24-, and having one element 41 of a clutch secured at its outer end.
The carriage may be drawn forward by the lever handles 14, the levers 15 being pivoted to the carriage frame 16, at their ends and formed with recesses 47 adapted to en gage with pins 48 set in the side edges of the guard plate 17, a further function of the levers and pins being to limit the rearward travel of the carriage.
Rising from the base 15, at the rear of the rails, are fixed standards 50 and 51, the former having on its outer side bearings 52, carrying the shaft 53, having upon it a pair of driving pulleys 54 and 55 for the open and crossed belts 56 and 57 respectively, thereby providing means for rotating the the pivots 61, oscillatable yokes 62, the same having extending arms 63 engaged together at their inner ends 64 so that upon actuating one of the yokes, the other is caused to move in the same manner; the other outer ends of the yokes are provided with operating levers 65 having handles 66, and provided with counterweights 67 as can best be seen in Fig. 2.
Carried by one end of the yokes 63 are brackets 70 having pivotally engaged guide pins 71 movable rectilinear-1y in lateral extensions 72 formed with the standards 50,
the brackets being fitted to receive shafts 74, one of which extends angularly downward and has fixed upon it the driving pulley 75, actuated by the belt 76.
The inner upper end of the shafts have secured to them wide faced wheels 78 over which is engaged an endless metallic band 79, to which are attached at intervals knife carriers movable longitudinally across the face of the work cylinder 30. 7
Each knife carrier is comprised of a: bracket 80 in the rear element 81 of which is a slidable rod 82, encircled by a coiled push spring 83 pressing against the thimble 84 formed with the knife holder 85 which is slidably mounted in a pivotal pin 86 in the bracket element 87; the knife holder in the form of a supporting plate 88 is disposed at an angle in order that the blades 90 be given shearing effect as it is pressed against the top plate 89 by the pressure plate 91 under the compression of the spring 92 carried in a socket 93 formed with the bracket 80, the plate being further supported by the arm 94.
A pair of spring arms 96 carry a concave guide roller 98, freely mounted on the shaft 99, the roller pressing the hide down upon the cylinder 30 as it traverses its length, immediately in front of the knife 90 and preventing the knife from scoring or cutting too deeply into the hide.
The foregoing construction is best shown in Figs. 5 and 6, while Fig. 7 shows an adaptation particularly applicable for use on the hair side of the hide, the principal differences being that the knife 100 is formed straightacross its cutting edge while the concave roller 101 has formed upon it a series of annular grooves 102, allowing the hair and depilatory sediments, etc, to stand up in front of the following knife blade to be removed with the ground hair, etc.
As the grooves in each succeeding roller are in staggered relation one to another, the hair displaced by one roller will stand up as the next passes so as to be sheared by the alternately succeeding knives.
Attached to the brackets 70 are arms 105 extending to the center of the machine, perpendicular to the shaft 74 and having a bearing 106 in which is a shaft 107 provided with afixed pulley 108 driven at a high rate of speed by the belt 109. I
On this shaft, in register with the band 7 9, is a grinding disk 110, having extending flanges 111 at its sides, the space between permitting the knife blades 90 to make contact with the face of the: disk and become sharpened, as by a revolving hone, in their passage by it, the function of the flanges being to prevent the rollers 98 from contacting with the grinding surface of the disk, the spring arms 96 allowing the rollers to move past without contact. 7
Another trimmingmeans, applicable to certain parts of the hide in preference tothe device previously described, consists of the roller 115 formed with helical cutting blades extending its full length, the roll being.
mounted longitudinally of the cylinder 30 in brackets 116 carried by stems 117 pivoted at 118 to the yokes 62, the stems being guided rectilinearly in extensions 120, formed. with the standards 50, opposite the extensions 72. V V
This roller 115 is further guided by lever arms 122 pivoted at 123 to the standards, and is driven by a pulley 125, through the belt 126 from the driving wheel 127 mounted at 129 on the standard 5.0.
A fixed cover 130 incloses the knives, band and driving mechanism, the same having a top plate 131 hinged at 132 in such manner that it can be readily raised for inspection and adjustment of the mechanism but which effectually prevents the accidental contact of the fingers, hands or arms of the operator with the knives.
Formed with the standards 50, are front extensions 140 having slotted brackets 141 at their extreme upper ends, provided with caps 142 and containing a pressure roll 143, its ends being mounted rotatably in bearing blocks held downward under the compression springs 146, the roll registering vertically with the center of the cylinder 30. V
The roll 143 is inclosed in a flexible covering 148' adapted to pressupon the hides direct whereby they are held to. the cylinder 30, and in addition, on each side of the roll are ducts 150 having transverse partitions 151 forming compartments in which are pressure release valves 152. 7
The lowerouter edges 153 of the ducts are ducts by the tubes 156 from a feed tube 157 leading to any convenient source of air supply.
Thus by manipulating a valve (not shown) the hides are firmly yet yieldingly held to the work cylinder.
In the adaptation shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the pneumatic pressure means are more widely separated and provided with hand operable actuating levers 160 and 165, pivoted respectively at 161 and 166, the same having pawls 162 and 167 engageable with serrated segments 163, and 168 as will be perceived.
In place of the central pressure roll, spirally fluted blades are formed on the roll 170, its ends 171 being rotatable in bearing blocks 172, movable vertically in the slot 173, driven by the belt 174: and actuated by the hand lever 175, pivoted at 176 and provided with an engaging pawl 17'? arranged with relation to the serrated segment 178, connections 180 passing through the cap 181 to the block 172, which is limited in its downward motion by the adjustable stops 182, and lock nuts 183.
In this form, a single guide stem 185 is slidably engaged with the projection 186 formed with the standard 50, the stem being operated by the link 188 pivoted at 190 and provided with an operating lever 191 having a counterweight 192.
As it is desirable that the exterior of the hides be operated upon while in a moist condition, a pipe 200 is secured longitudinally over the top of the machine to the frames 50, the same being provided with a plurality of small apertures 201, allowing a limited quantity of water, supplied to the pipe in any convenient manner, to flow in minute streams over the hide, rendering it in best condition for the knives and also serving to wash away the cuttings.
In other respects the construction is as before described, and from the foregoing it will be seen that an eflicient and simple mechanism is disclosed whereby hides may be held upon the work cylinder so as not to move under the influence of the knives, the device employed being eminently safe to operate as well as satisfactory in its performance.
The process of operation is very simple and effective. The carriage in which the work cylinder is lodged is pulled forward away from the dangerous defleshing mech anism. The cylinder drive being simultaneously and gradually unclutched causes the cylinder to stop in its motion. Then the pressure roll is lifted together with the pneumatic hide holders, so as to allow a new hide to be placed upon the cylinder. Thereafter the carriage is moved into its former position, and the clutch sets the cylinder gradually in motion. As the properties of the various parts of the hides vary as to their strength, it is necessary to apply differently designed depilating or defleshing mechanisms upon each particular hide part, in order to prevent an injury to the hides.
It would be for instance dangerous to use the spring controlled. knives for defleshing the weak ends of the hides. The helically bladed knife roller is to be rightly used instead. On the other hand the strong middle parts of hides require the use of the spring controlled knives for the primary defieshing; the knife roller may be applied thereafter for finishing. In order to facilitate the application of the proper defieshing mechanism upon the particular hide parts, the working cylinder is required to be operable in either direction, and in addition to gradually start and finish its revolution in clock-wise or anti-clock-wise direction, consequently causing a gradual harmless finish of the hide ends.
By means of its peculiar drive it is especially easy to bring the cylinder forward in attaching or detaching hides and as provisions are made for rotating the cylinder without shock or jar in either direction, unusual results are attained, further en hanced by the use of knives most suitable for different parts of the hide.
It is obvious that both the hairy and fleshy side of hides or parts thereof may be treated 011 this machine which is designed to practically take care of the entire beam house work.
Having thus described my invention and indicated the manner of its construction and operation, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a base, standards rising therefrom and a plurality of knives mounted operatively on said standards, of a track 011 said base in front of said standards, a carriage movable on said track, a work cylinder revoluble in said carriage, a clutch device for operatively engagin said cylinder, a fixed guard plate in front of said track, and means for moving said carriage between said guard plate and its operative point.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a base, standards rising therefrom and a plurality of knives mounted, operatively on said standards, of a track on said base in front of said standards, a carriage movable on said track, a work cylinder revoluble in said carriage, means for rotating said cylinder in either direction when in operative position, means for en gaging said cylinder with the rotating means, means for holding said cylinder when in operative position, meansfor mov-' said cylinder at the end of said track.
In a machine of the class described, the combination with a base, standards rising therefrom and a plurality of knives mounted operatively on said standards, of a track on said base in front of said standards, a carriage movable on said track, a work cylinder revoluble in said carriage, means for rotating said cylinder in either direction when in operative position, means for engaging said cylinder with the rotating means, means for pressing hides upon said cylinder, auxiliary pneumatic clamping means. for said cylinder, at band upon which said knives are carried, conical rolls suited to said cylinder, said rolls cooperating with said knives, means for grinding said knives automatically and means combined with said grinding means for preventing grinding of said rolls. 7

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a fixed base, a carriage movable thereon and a'work cylinder carried by said carriage, a clutch device for operatively engaging said cylinder,ofmeans for clamping hides to said cylinders, a plurality of spring controlled knives movable lengthwise of said cylinder, means for grindin said knives during their passage, a helically bladed roll rotatable against said cylinder, and means for selectively causing either said knives or said roll to make contact with said cylinder.
5. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a fixed base, a carriage movable thereon and a work cylinder carried by said carriage, a clutch device for opcratively engaging said cylinder, of means for clamping hides to said cylinders, a plurality'of spring controlled knives movable lengthwise of said cylinder, means for grinding said knives during their passage, a helically bladed roll rotatable against said cylinder, means for operating either said knives or said roll selectively, and means for supplying water over said cylinder.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a base, a carriage movable thereon, a )work "cylinder rotatably mounted upon said carriage, of means for rotating said cylinder in either direction, of means for gradually engaging said cylinder with said rotating means, means for gradually disengaging said cylinder from said rotating means, of means for adjustably securing hides or parts thereof to said cylinder, a plurality oi adjustable spring controlled knives movable lengthwise of said cylinder, means for grinding said knives, an adjustable and rotatable heli cally bladed roll longitudinally disposed to said cylinder, and means for causing either said knives or said roll, or both to engage with or disengage from said working cyl inder.
