Abstract

24,563. Mordey, W. M. Oct. 26. Sparking-plugs. - The spark or arc of a sparking-plug is acted on by a permanent or an electro magnet so as to spread the spark. The spark occurs between convex electrodes f, g, situated between magnetic poles c, and is caused to travel from the short space at the centre of the electrodes to the increasing space at the ends. The poles c are formed of soft-iron pieces b, which constitute polar extensions of the magnet a. The metal of the sparking-plug may be used as the magnet or the extension thereof, and the magnet is separated from the wall i of the combustion chamber by a plug h of brass or other non-magnetic material. Water may be circulated through the plug to cool the magnet.
