Description
F. J. SMITH lustrated in the Paten ed Dec. 9, 1924.
UNlTED STAT-ESPATENT OFFICE.
roaans'r .1. SMITH, or corner, 01110..
PLUG.
Application filed ma 21, 1922; Serial no; 576,614.
7'0 all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I. Foamsr United States. residing at a citizen of the J. SMITH,
Copley. in the county of Summit and State of Ohio. have invented new and useful Imv provcments in Plugs. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spark plug. the general vention being a double spark gap. thus fectiveness of theiplug'.
object of the into provide means for forming increasing the ef- Another object of the invention is to pro-- ide'means for which provides the extra facilitates the jumping of the first gap.
magnetizing the lmember spark gap which the current across This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and parts. to be hereinafter f specifically pointed out claims.
accompanying drawings and arrangement of the-several ully described, il-
in the appende In describing my invention in detail. reference will be had to the accompanymg drawing wherein like characters denote like I or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal of one form of the invent sectional view non.
Figure 2 is a side view o fthisform of the invention.
Figure 3 is a longitudi of another form of the in Figure 4 is a side View Referring to Figures 1 the shell of the plug,
and 3 the nut for holding The electrode is shown at 4" and the 5'). In carrying out my inshell. ground wire at vention I provide a third rial sectional view xjention,

time the This will increase the efiiciency of the plug and it will not. to prevent the forma tion of carbon on If one gap becomes fouled the other gap will fire and .the force of the explosion will remove the carbon from the other gap.
The member 6" hasits upper end conn'eeted with a bundle 8 'of soft iron wire. The conductor 9 from the timeris provided with a coil 9 of insulated wire which surrounds the bundle 8 and is insulated there-f from and then the coil 9' is'conneeted with the electrode 4". Thus the member 6" is umgnetized which facilitates the passing of the current from the electrode to the terminal of this member.
- Instead of. embedding the directly in the body of porcelain I may place them in a sleeve 10 of porcelain and secure this sleeye to the upper part of the body as shown in Figures 3 and 4L This sleeve may be threadedto the body. wise secured thereto.
' Itis thought from the of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be undeistood that- I make changes in the construction and in the combination aml-arrangement of the several parts. provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims,
\Vhat I claim is a 1. A spark plug comprising a shell, an insulating bodv carried thereby. a ground wire carried by the shell. an electrode carried by thebody. a coil connected with the electrode, a member carried by the body and having its terminal located betweemthe end of the electrode and the ground wire and a soft metal core embedded in the body and connectedv with said member.
2. A device of the class described comprising a shell. aminsulated body carried thereby. a ground wire carried by the shell, an electrode carried by the bod v. a member carried by the body and having its terminal located between the end of the electrode and the ground wire and means for magnetizing the said member from the ignition current.
Tn tcstimunv whereof I afiix my signature.
