Fatty acids and glycerine, obtaining by decomposing fats and fatty oils; purifying fatty acids.-Purified fatty acids and glycerine are obtained by treating sodium, potassium, magnesium, barium, lead, copper, ammonium, tetraalkyl ammonium or like soaps with hot sulphurous anhydride, so that the separated fatty acids are in liquid form and, together with the glycerine, can be separated, by filtration from the sulphites formed. The glycerine and fatty acids can then be separated by decantation &c. The fatty acids are blanched by the sulphurous anhydride during the reaction. The soaps may be moistened, if not sufficiently moist to enable the reaction to take place. Superheated steam or air or oxygen may be mixed with the anhydride. The process may be carried out in a number of vessels connected in series and at pressures above or below that of the atmosphere, or alternately above and below it.
