Abstract
A process for the continuous hydrolysis of fats or oils with water to produce fatty acids and glycerol is carried out at a temperature not exceeding 245 DEG C. and under a pressure which is sufficiently high to prevent the formation of a vapour phase above the reaction mixture, the reactants being conducted in counter-current relation through at least two stages, in both or all of which the pressure and temperature are kept at substantially the same levels and in each of which the glycerol-water mixture is recirculated at a rate which is a multiple of the fatty phase throughput rate in the stage, the fat-fatty acid mixture being substantially completely withdrawn from each stage, and fresh water or glycerol-water mixture is admitted to each stage into the rising fatty acid or fatty acid-fat mixture above the inlet through which the recirculating liquid is supplied into the rising fatty acid or fatty acid-fat mixture. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
