Winches; winch handles, engaging and disengaging.-A winch for raising and lowering ships' boats comprises a drum enclosed in a casing, and having an internally toothed ring b bolted to one of the flanges. The drum is driven through pinions c, d from a shaft carrying a pulley e which is driven by a chain j when it is desired to hoist the boats up the ship's side. The boats are lifted from the chocks by operating a lever inserted in radial holes in the pulley e. The empty falls are raised by a handle on the pulley c. Self-sustaining gear.-The boats are retained by a pawl k engaging a ratchet surface formed on the exterior of the ring b. The pawl k is carried by a pivoted lozenge-shaped lever f which is normally locked by a sliding bolt g. When the pawl is free, the boat is lowered under the control of a brake h acting on the exterior of the ring b.
