Abstract
19,344. Tzaut, G. Aug. 25, 1911, [Convention date]. Dash-pots; vibration-dampers; piston moving in chamber containing balls.-Relates to shockabsorbing devices for vehicles, of the kind in which the movement of a piston or sector in a chamber is resisted by a medium contained within the chamber, and consists in partly or completely filling the chamber with small steel balls which act as the resisting-medium. Fig. 1 shows a chamber 1 connected with the vehicle frame and containing small steel balls which do not resist upward movement of the tapered piston 2 but retard downward movement. Fig. 4 shows a piston 2 tapered in both directions so as to cause a resistance to both upward and downward movement. The piston may be shaped as shown in Fig. 5, or the tapered portion 3 may be loosely mounted on the rod 2 as shown in Fig. 6, so as to allow a free movement during the first part of the return stroke. Fig. 7 shows a sector-shaped casing 5 partly filled with steel balls in which a vane 4 with tapered sides 6 reciprocates, a leather plate 7 being interposed between the face of the vane 4 and the flat end of the casing. The resistance to movement of the vane causes a gradually increasing frictional resistance between the vane and the casing.
